Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on parts of the U.S. East Coast a month ago Thursday after tearing through the Caribbean. In the weeks since, the storm's scope has come into sharper focus.

DEATHS

Sandy killed at least 125 people in the United States. That includes 60 in New York ? 43 of them in New York City ? 34 in New Jersey and 16 in Pennsylvania. At least seven people died in West Virginia, where the storm dropped heavy snow. Sandy killed 71 people in the Caribbean, including 54 in Haiti.

LOSSES

Sandy is being blamed for about $62 billion in damage and other losses in the U.S., the vast majority of it in New York and New Jersey, a number that could increase. It's the second-costliest storm in U.S. history after 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which caused $128 billion in damage in inflation-adjusted dollars. Sandy caused at least $315 million in damage in the Caribbean.

DAMAGE

Sandy damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, more than 72,000 in New Jersey alone. In New York, 305,000 housing units were damaged or destroyed and more than 265,000 businesses affected. In Cuba, the number of damaged homes has been estimated at 130,000 to 200,000.

DISASTER AID

The governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are mounting a united effort to get federal aid for the region. New York is seeking $42 billion, including about $9 billion for projects to head off damage in future storms; New Jersey wants $37 billion, including $7.4 billion for future projects; and Connecticut seeks $3.2 billion for the future.

MAGNITUDE

The National Hurricane Center now says tropical force winds extended 820 miles at their widest, down from an earlier estimate of 1,000 miles. Sandy's pure kinetic energy for storm surge and wave "destruction potential" reached a 5.8 on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 0 to 6 scale, the highest measured.

DOWN THE ROAD

Governments are seeking money to help head off future disasters, as climate scientists continue to predict rising sea levels and the potential for more bad storms. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants electrical transformers in commercial buildings hauled to upper floors; the ability to shutter key tunnels, airports and subways; and to require hospitals to have backup power on high ground instead of on lower floors or in basements.

President signs whistle-blower bill for US workers

Associated Press

Posted on November 27, 2012 at 9:00 PM

Updated yesterday at 10:02 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama signed legislation Tuesday that affords greater protection to federal employees who expose fraud, waste and abuse in government operations.

Capping a 13-year effort by supporters of whistle-blower rights, the new law closes loopholes created by court rulings, which removed protections for federal whistle-blowers. One loophole specified that whistle-blowers were only protected when they were the first to report misconduct.

Obama also signed legislation that protects U.S. airlines from having to pay into a European Union program to cut down on pollutants. Earlier this month, the EU postponed its enforcement of the payment for non-EU airlines amid protests from numerous countries and threats of a possible trade war.

The whistle-blower law makes it easier to punish supervisors who try to retaliate against the government workers.

The federal official who investigates retaliation, Special Counsel Carolyn Lerner, said her office "stands ready to implement these important reforms, which will better ensure that no employee suffers retaliation for speaking out against government waste or misconduct."

The new legislation, however, would go beyond restoring protections, to expand whistle-blower rights and clarify certain protections. For example, whistle-blowers could challenge the consequences of government policy decisions.

Specific protections would be given to certain employees, including government scientists who challenge censorship. Workers at the Transportation Security Administration, who provide airport security, would be covered under the law for the first time.

The law also would clarify that whistleblowers have the right to communicate with Congress.

To stop illegal retaliation, the law would make it easier to discipline those responsible, by modifying the burden of proof required when taking action against those trying to punish whistle-blowers. Also, the Office of Special Counsel, which was established to protect federal employees, would no longer be liable for attorney fees of government managers if the office does not prevail in a disciplinary action.

The new law would suspend the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals' sole jurisdiction to review decisions in whistle-blower cases.

The law's supporters said the court consistently narrowed protections and ruled for whistle-blowers only three times in 229 cases between October 1994 and May 2012. A review by all federal circuit courts was added as a two-year experiment.

Tom Devine, legal director of the Government Accountability Project, said, "This reform took 13 years to pass because it can make so much difference against fraud, waste and abuse. Government managers at all levels made pleas and repeatedly blocked the bill through procedural sabotage."

Devine, whose organization represents whistle-blowers, said the bill sailed through Congress once some senators who previously worked in secret to block a vote dropped their opposition.

The new airlines law was a response to an EU program that places a cap on carbon dioxide emissions from industrial polluters. Early this year, the law was expanded to include all airlines flying into and out of Europe.

U.S. airlines complained that they would be charged even for the emissions discharged over the United States or the Atlantic on their way to European destinations. The U.S. industry says it would cost it some $3.1 billion between 2012 and 2020. Those payments were to start in April, but the EU postponed that earlier this month.

"Although European leaders have temporarily pulled back their tax proposal, the law signed by the president today will help ensure the EU scheme will not resurface next year like a phoenix rising from the ashes," said Rep. John Mica of Florida, the Republican chairman of the House Transportation Committee,

The airlines emissions legislation requires the transportation secretary to prohibit U.S. airlines from paying into the EU emissions program if that prohibition is deemed in the public interest. It also urges the administration to engage in international talks to seek a global approach to aircraft emissions.

"The Obama administration should seek binding regulations and limits on such pollution when it meets with international partners to establish these rules at the International Civil Aviation Organization," said Sarah Saylor of the environmental group Earthjustice.

Obama also signed legislation that permits construction of a natural gas pipeline within certain areas of the Gateway National Recreation Area in New York City.

He also signed into law legislation that sets a cost-of-living adjustment for veterans who receive disability compensation. The increase is estimated to amount to about 1.9 percent.

'Killing Them Softly' Review: Brad Pitt Film Hammers Its Message Hard

-- Writer-director Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" is an incredibly stylish genre exercise set in the world of mobsters, junkies and lowlifes, but it's also trying incredibly hard to be About Something.

Not content merely to be profane, abrasive and occasionally, darkly amusing, it also wants to be relevant. And so Dominik has taken the 1974 crime novel "Cogan's Trade" by George V. Higgins and set it in the days before the 2008 presidential election, just as the U.S. economy is in the midst of catastrophic collapse. Every television and radio is tuned to then-candidate Barack Obama or President George W. Bush addressing the nation ? even in bars and thugs' cars ? with the volume cranked way up, commenting all-too obviously on the film's action.

As if we couldn't decipher for ourselves that organized crime functions as its own form of capitalism, "Killing Them Softly" turns on the mini-implosion that occurs when a couple of idiots rob a mob-protected card game. Scoot McNairy plays the jittery ex-con Frankie; his inept partner in crime is an Australian heroin addict played by Ben Mendelsohn. Both are aggressively grungy. As they get away with briefcases full of cash, we hear Bush in the background, asking rhetorically, "What does this mean for your financial future?" Could it really be that obvious?

The corporate types at the top of the syndicate, represented by an uptight, humorless (and nameless) Richard Jenkins, want to restore order, so they ask Jackie Cogan, an enforcer played by Brad Pitt (star of Dominik's haunting, poetic "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"), to investigate the heist and punish the perpetrators. This is one of those effortless Pitt performances that exemplify how beautifully he manages to be both a serious actor and a superstar; the slicked-back hair, aviator sunglasses and gold chains are a showy shorthand to signify he's a dangerous guy, but the consistently surprising choices he makes with the rat-a-tat dialogue reveal his character's intelligence.

Jackie brings in an old colleague, veteran hit man Mickey (James Gandolfini), to take out the robbers and send a message to the rest of the criminal world. The scenes these two actors share are by far the film's best, including one in which they sit at a bar and quietly catch up on everything from work to marriage to alcoholism; they're so different in tone from everything else, they feel like they're part of an entirely separate movie. Gandolfini's character is the only one who feels like a complete and complicated person: brazen and abusive but also sentimental and deeply insecure.

At the other end of the aesthetic spectrum is the artfully graphic pummeling some of these characters take, particularly Ray Liotta as the guy who runs the card game in question (and once got caught trying to rob it himself). The hard thwack of a fist against a jaw matches the pummel of rain and the splatter of blood. Bullets fire from a handgun in super-slow motion, piercing the raindrops, then a car window, then someone's skull. It's all very painstaking and cool-looking (the work of the gifted cinematographer Greig Fraser) but it also feels like part of a prevalent cynicism, given the film's heavy-handed message.

"America's not a country, it's just a business," Jackie declares in the film's final monologue, a message "Killing Them Softly" already had hammered pretty hard during the previous hour and a half.

"Killing Them Softly," a Weinstein Co. release, is rated R for violence, sexual references, pervasive language and some drug use. Running time: 97 minutes. Two stars out of four.

'Two and a Half Men' actor not expected on set

NEW YORK (AP) ? The teenage actor who stars in "Two and a Half Men" and called the CBS comedy "filth" may have some time before he faces the show's producers.

Angus T. Jones wasn't expected at rehearsal Tuesday because he is not going to be in the episode they are filming, according to a person close to the show who spoke on condition of anonymity because producers were not commenting publicly.

Jones, 19, has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says in a video posted online by a Christian church that he doesn't want to be on it anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

The person familiar with the production schedule said Jones does not appear in either of the two episodes filming before the end of the year, so he wouldn't be expected back at work until after the New Year.

His character has been largely absent because he has joined the Army.

CBS and producer Warner Bros. Television have not commented.

In a radio broadcast, "The Voice of Prophecy," recorded for the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Jones' birthday in October, he described his religious path. He has been attending a Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Los Angeles area.

Jones said he felt drawn to God after a tough time in his life when his parents were going through a divorce and he experimented with drugs.

"I never drank," he said. "That was one thing God protected me from, and I'm still a virgin. God protected me from those things."

Jones said that "it's very weird that I'm on a television show, especially now that I am trying to walk with God. My television show has nothing to do with God and doesn't want anything to do with God."

Jones said that he had no plans to get out of his contract, which reportedly pays him $350,000 an episode.

"Two and a Half Men" survived a wild publicity ride less than two years ago, when Sheen was fired for his drug use and publicly complained about the network and the show's creator, Chuck Lorre.

Jones plays Jake, the son of Jon Cryer's uptight divorced chiropractor character, Alan, and the nephew of Sheen's hedonistic philandering music jingle writer, Charlie. Sheen was replaced by Ashton Kutcher, who plays billionaire Walden.

In the video posted by Forerunner Chronicles in Seale, Ala., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he's involved in adversely affects the brain and "there's no playing around when it comes to eternity."

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he said. "I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show."

The show was moved from Monday to Thursday this season, and its average viewership has dropped from 20 million an episode to 14.5 million, although last year's numbers were somewhat inflated by the intense interest in Kutcher's debut. It is the third most popular comedy on television behind CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family."

The actors on "Two and a Half Men" have contracts that run through the end of the season.

UPDATE 1-Greece hires Deutsche, Morgan Stanley for voluntary debt buy back- source

Wed Nov 28, 2012 10:47am EST

* Greece to publish terms of voluntary buy back early next week

* Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley to run the process- source

* Greek banking stocks tank on buy back concerns

* Finmin Stournaras promises more reforms

By Lefteris Papadimas and Harry Papachristou

ATHENS, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Greece's debt buy back plan, a key element of the cash-strapped country's bailout deal, will be voluntary but must succeed, Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said on Wednesday.

In his first major news conference since a deal earlier this week to shave about 40 billion euros off the country's debt pile, Stournaras said the offer would be attractive to bond holders.

But he declined to give details.

"The buy back must succeed. It's our patriotic duty to succeed, it is important for the country's credibility," he said.

Greece must conduct the deal by Dec. 13, before it receives more than 30 billion euros in withheld bailout payments from the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to ministry officials, Greece might spend around 10 billion euros from the euro zone's rescue fund EFSF, which would allow it to buy around 30 billion euros worth of debt, cutting its outstanding obligations by around 20 billion euros.

Deutsche Bank will be the lead manager of the operation, working together with Morgan Stanley as deal manager, a senior finance ministry official told Reuters earlier on Wednesday.

But private sector analysts have raised questions over whether it would attract enough interest from bondholders to deliver the promised savings and how it would be funded.

Greek bank stocks have plunged by more than 15 percent since the plan was announced on Tuesday, on concerns they will be forced into a raw deal that would hurt their capital.

Greek banks and pension funds hold nearly 30 billion euros of Greek debt, about half of the outstanding Greek bonds in the hands of private investors.

Most of their capital has been already wiped out by an earlier debt cut in March and they must be recapitalised with more than 40 billion euros in bailout funds. If they fail to attract private investors to provide about a tenth of the capital they need, they will be nationalised.

Stournaras sought to address these concerns, saying the buyback will be voluntary and a bargain for investors at the current, high prices at which Greek bonds are trading.

The EU and the IMF have said that they would not disburse the aid promised to Greece before reviewing the buy-back's results. But they have not given any targets for it.

Greece's Public Debt Management Agency expects to publish the invitation for the plan early next week, maybe as early as Monday.

Officials have said that the repurchase has a target cost of around 35 cents on the euro. A repurchase at that price is seen as a golden investment opportunity for hedge funds which have bought Greek bonds at rock-bottom prices.

A Greek finance ministry official said that hedge funds might hold as much as 25 billion euro of Greek bonds bought at very low prices.

Stournaras made clear Greece has a tough road ahead to implement its pledges to lenders and secure funds.

"This is not the time to celebrate. This is where the hard part begins," he said. "Ahead of us lie months of hard work to implement what we have pledged."

Korg announces iPolysix App for iPad, recreates classic analog polyphonic synthesizer

iPolysix App for iPad

MELVILLE, N.Y. /Music Industry Newswire/ ? Korg has unveiled the latest in its series of musical instrument apps. The new, intuitive iPolysix app evokes Korg?s legendary analog polyphonic synthesizer while taking full advantage of the iPad? interface. Up to eight instances of the synth can be used in conjunction with new features that include a sequencer, drum machine, multiple effects, Korg?s acclaimed Kaoss touch functionality for intuitive note and controller entry, and a complete automated mixer.

The original Polysix, a six-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer, launched in 1981. It quickly rose in popularity due to its combination of 6-note polyphony (a generous amount for the time) and a price that was nearly half of similarly-featured products. iPolysix uses Korg?s proprietary ?CMT? (Component Modeling Technology) to perfectly simulate the electronic circuits of the original instrument and its distinctively deep and rich pad sounds, pulsing basses, and crisp leads. Its layout offers beginners an easy way to start sound sculpting. It has also been expanded with music production functionality for enhanced musical possibilities.

Polyseq is iPolysix?s integrated polyphonic step sequencer that provides up to 64 steps for two dedicated synth instances and six poly-based drum instances ? all drawing on the Polysix engine and interface. Unique features include sequence mode functionality from Korg?s SQ-10 analog sequencer that allows users to play a sequence backward, or play back only the odd or even-numbered steps.

Users can call up either an onscreen keyboard for easy note entry, or two side by side Kaoss Pads that can be controlled simultaneously: one for note entry and one for control over the user?s choice of synth parameters. Musical phrases can be generated simply by rubbing a finger on the Kaoss Pad. This enables professional music production and creative performances, even for those who have no musical knowledge or have never played an instrument before. These Kaoss Pads have been customized for iPolysix to allow not only single-note performance, but also polyphonic playing.

Polystage is a platform on which iPolysix users can share their songs. iPolysix users can make their songs available to other users across the globe simply by uploading their song directly from the interface. iPolysix users can listen to and rate other user?s songs, or collaborate on a remix from rough ideas that have been uploaded.

Similarly, users can share their works via the popular SoundCloud feature from within the iPolysix app. SoundCloud provides a way to publish songs or to collaborate on new music with friends anywhere in the world via audio data export.

To celebrate the launch, the iPolysix app is available for download from Apple?s App Store at a special price of US $14.99 until December 31st, 2012. The regular price is US$29.99.

Also in celebration of the launch, Korg has announced a special half price offer on all Korg apps from November 26 through December 31, 2012.

Welcoming Your New Baby: Planning an Adoptive Baby Shower ...

by Kelley Schaefer-Levi

baby feet in adoptive mother's hands

?

When my husband and I were in the middle of adoption planning, we knew we wanted to have a celebration of some kind to commemorate the birth of our first child. We also wanted to experience some of the baby preparation process during our wait to become parents, so we registered at the usual baby stores, had our daughter?s car seat installed, attended baby care classes and asked our friends and families for help with having a shower.

There are so many types of adoption and adoption stories out there; some couples are able to plan ahead for the birth of their child, and some couples don?t have time before placement occurs. Some families adopt toddlers and older children where a baby shower may not be necessary. Others may choose to wait to begin planning and celebrating until the day their child comes home. In our case of private, open adoption, our daughter?s birthmother chose us early on in her pregnancy, so we had ample time to prepare.

There are two camps, it seems, when it comes to celebrating, mentally preparing, readying your home and the adopted child?s room beforehand. Some say, don?t?do it pending an interruption in placement. And some say, prepare as if you are welcoming a bio kid. We were advised to be cautious and while we did prepare?our daughter?s room in advance, we didn?t go too far over the top. We were given?a crib that we set up, stocked a changing table, and readied some other basics without emotionally attaching too much. We took the risk and I?m glad we did.

?

By the time shower planning began, we knew we were having a girl and had chosen a name for our daughter with the help of her birthmother, but everything?we requested and bought was pretty gender neutral, and that would have been the case if we weren?t adopting. The shower was a family friendly event where guests could stop by to merely wish us well on our path to parenthood. We ate lots of food, had a few drinks, played a game or two and formally said goodbye to our lives as married people with a dog. More than anything our shower was a means to celebrate the pending birth of our child who we had not yet met, and to mark an extremely important diaper change ahead.

There are many ways to create a beautiful shower or homecoming celebration for an adopted child. One way is to create a book for the unborn baby, if the adoption is of an infant and there is time to prepare, have guests write a note to the child with a wish attached. We still have our guest book and our daughter asks us to read it to her from time to time. My husband and I also wrote letters in the book of our hopes and dreams for her before she was born. Again, this was a risk, but I?m glad we went for it.

Those who choose to have a traditional shower before the baby is born for mama only, can do many of the same things you would do at a non-adoptive baby shower, save for measuring bellies. Adoptive mamas, depending on their sensitivity to the subject may not want to focus on the aspects of birth as much as the celebration of life and parenting. However, mamahood, adoptive and not is still challenging for first-timers, and showers and preparation can help ease the transition into the world of babies.

?

If you choose to celebrate in advance, showers should reflect who you are and the gravity of the situation. There is the possibility that an interruption in adoption planning may occur and because of this, being honest from the get go is ideal. My advice would be to choose carefully who you ask to help you plan. Those involved need to keep the details from becoming too specific and really focus on honoring the monumental event of parenthood and starting a family, and less about the heaviness or difficulty that potentially lies ahead. Finally, a note on gifts for the adopted child. We received so many beautiful gifts for our unborn daughter. Some very useful and practical and others adorable or meaningful. Guests should be informed of the age of the child being placed with the adoptive family on the invitation, so they can take it into consideration when buying a gift. Most importantly, when planning your celebration?have fun! Your baby?s on their way, and you will be sleep deprived and parenting soon.

Bangladesh's worst-ever factory blaze kills over 100

DHAKA (Reuters) - Fire swept through a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital killing more than 100 people, the fire brigade said on Sunday, in the country's worst-ever factory blaze.

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws, and overcrowding and locked fire doors are common. The cause of this fire was not immediately known.

The blaze at the nine-storey Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia industrial belt of Dhaka started on the ground floor late on Saturday and spread, trapping hundreds of workers.

"So far, the confirmed death toll is 109, including nine who died by jumping from the building," Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of the fire brigade, told Reuters.

Witnesses said the workers, mostly women, ran for safety as the fire engulfed the plant but were unable to get through narrow exits.

"Many jumped out from the windows and were injured, or died on the spot," Milon, a resident, said.

Most of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and authorities had started burials while mourning relatives scrambled to find their loved ones, officials and witnesses said.

Unofficial sources put the number of dead at more than 120. Most of the bodies were found on the second floor, Rahman said.

Bangladesh has around 4,500 garment factories and is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.

This was the highest ever death toll in a Bangladeshi factory fire. In 2006, 84 people were killed in a blaze in the southern port of Chittagong where fire exits had been blocked.

More than 300 factories near the capital shut for almost a week earlier this year as workers demanded higher wages and better working conditions.

Egypt's Mursi to meet judges over power grab

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi meets senior judges on Monday to try to ease a crisis over his seizure of new powers which has set off violent protests reminiscent of the revolution last year that led to the rise of his Islamist movement.

The justice minister said he believed Mursi would agree with the country's highest judicial authority on its proposal to limit the scope of the new powers.

But the protesters, some camped in Cairo's Tahrir Square, have said only retracting his decree will satisfy them, a sign of the deep rift between Islamists and their opponents that is destabilizing Egypt two years after Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

"There is no use amending the decree," said Tarek Ahmed, 26, a protester who stayed the night in Tahrir, where tents covered the central traffic circle. "It must be scrapped."

One person has been killed and about 370 have been injured in clashes between police and protesters since Mursi issued the decree on Thursday shielding his decisions from judicial review, emboldened by international plaudits for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas.

The stock market is down more than 7 percent.

Mursi's political opponents have accused him of behaving like a new dictator and the West has voiced its concern, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel and lies at the heart of the Arab Spring.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Mursi's office said he would meet Egypt's highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, on Monday, and the council hinted at compromise.

Mursi's decree should apply only to "sovereign matters", it said, suggesting it did not reject the declaration outright, and called on judges and prosecutors, some of whom began a strike on Sunday, to return to work.

Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky, speaking about the council statement, said: "I believe President Mohamed Mursi wants that."

LIBERALS ANGRY

The protesters are worried that Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood aims to dominate the post-Mubarak era after winning the first democratic parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

A deal with a judiciary dominated by Mubarak-era judges, which Mursi has pledged to reform, may not placate them.

Banners in Tahrir called for dissolving the assembly drawing up a constitution, an Islamist-dominated body Mursi made immune from legal challenge. Many liberals and others have walked out of the assembly saying their voices were not being heard.

Only once a constitution is written can a new parliamentary election be held. Until then, legislative and executive power remains in Mursi's hands, and Thursday's decree puts his decisions above judicial oversight.

One Muslim Brotherhood member was killed and 60 people were hurt on Sunday in an attack on the main office of the Brotherhood in the Egyptian Nile Delta town of Damanhour, the website of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said.

The party's offices have also been attacked in other cities.

A security source had earlier put the number of wounded at more than 500, but later clarified that this was the number injured since street battles erupted last week with police in and around Tahrir before the decree was announced.

One politician said the scale of the crisis could push opponents towards a deal to avoid a further escalation. Mursi's opponents have called for a big demonstration on Tuesday.

"I am very cautiously optimistic because the consequences are quite, quite serious, the most serious they have been since the revolution," said Mona Makram Ebeid, former member of parliament and prominent figure in Egyptian politics.

"This is the most critical and most dramatic moment since the revolution," she said. "He has succeeded in uniting the opposition camp who for the time being seem to be unison."

Mursi's office repeated assurances that the steps would be temporary, and said he wanted dialogue with political groups to find "common ground" over what should go into the constitution.

Talks with Mursi have been rejected by members of a National Salvation Front, a new opposition coalition that brings together liberal, leftist and other politicians and parties, who until Mursi's decree had been a fractious bunch struggling to unite.

MILITARY STAYING OUT

"There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," prominent opposition leader and Mohamed ElBaradei said on Saturday. He has said he expected to act as the Front's coordinator.

The military has stayed out of the crisis after leading Egypt through a messy 16-month transition to a presidential election in June. Analysts say Mursi neutralized the army when he sacked top generals in August, appointing a new generation who now owe their advancement to the Islamist president.

Though the military still wields influence through business interests and a security role, it is out of frontline politics.

Images of protesters clashing with police and tear gas wafting through Tahrir Square have been unsettling reminder of the uprising that toppled Mubarak in February 2011 and violence that flared under army rule, scaring investors and tourists.

Egypt had hoped to stop the economic rot by signing an initial deal last week for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund. As well as tumbling share prices, yields at a Sunday treasury bill auction rose, putting even more pressure on the government that faces a crushing budget deficit.

"We are back to square one, politically, socially," said Mohamed Radwan of Pharos Securities, an Egyptian brokerage firm.

Issued just a day after Mursi received glowing tributes from Washington for his work brokering a deal to end eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas, the decree drew warnings from the West to uphold democracy. Washington has leverage because of billions of dollars it sends in annual military aid.

The decree protects the assembly writing the constitution from dissolution before completing its work, and it now has a deadline of February. The constitutional court, which has declared the Islamist-dominated lower house of parliament void, was expected to rule on the validity of the assembly on December 2.

Many of Mursi's political opponents share the view that Egypt's judiciary needs reform, though they disagree with his methods. Mursi's new powers allowed him to sack the prosecutor general who took his job during the Mubarak era and is unpopular among reformists of all stripes.

home for the holidays, for now. | girl meets life.

Well, here we are again ? smack dab in the middle of the holiday season. I?m still in Pennsylvania for my first of two holiday visits here, and it?s been quite lovely.

Our family tradition has always been to stay home the day after Thanksgiving to decorate the house for Christmas. I think it stemmed from my mom not wanting to go shopping on Black Friday. Luckily for her, it seems to have worked for over 25 years.

We?re a fake tree family, in case you were wondering?

?and a fake fire family too ;)

Our trip to the mall was reserved for yesterday, where mom, Katie and I enjoyed the last of the Twilight movies.

(I know, I cried because it?s the end too.)

And for a family post-post-post Thanksgiving dinner: sushi, naturally.

As usual, my fortune left me more confused than enlightened. But hey, maybe it could speak to someone??

One of the things I?ve definitely loved the most about this visit home is getting to spend a ton of time with my sister, Katie. We?ve gotten so much closer as we get older, and it?s exciting to see where each of our lives are taking us. Isn?t she a beaut??

I?ll be here for another day before heading back to New York. I must say that my newly Christmas-spirited self is pretty excited to go back to the holiday-filled city..!

Do you go home at all for the holidays? How far do you live from your family?

Huawei Ascend G 330 lands on UK shores through TalkTalk

Huawei left us wondering whether the Ascend G 330 would venture beyond mainland Europe with its tempting blend of solid specs and a low price. The smartphone is spreading its wings -- if only just, with a launch on TalkTalk in the UK. When it ships to the carrier in December, the 4-inch, 1GHz dual-core smartphone will be tuned for British audiences with preloaded BBC iPlayer and news apps as well as EA's Sims Freeplay for some casual gaming. Most of the appeal may come from a cheap-as-chips price, as the G 330 will be free on contract for as little as £10 ($16) per month. If you can bear going without an all-out flagship like the Ascend D1 Quad XL, it's a tempting lure.

(AP) ? A bomb blast in a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus killed four people and seriously wounded a member of a faction that has backed Syrian President Bashar Assad in the country's bitter civil war, activists said Friday.

Syria's Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, lashed out at neighboring Turkey, which has sheltered anti-Assad fighters.

The ministry denounced Turkey's request for NATO Patriot surface-to-air missiles along its border with Syria as "a new provocative step." Turkey made the request earlier this week to bolster its defenses and prevent a spillover of the Syrian civil war onto its territory.

The Damascus explosion late Thursday in the Yarmouk camp targeted the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, the Palestinian group said.

Four people died and a PFLP-GC activist was seriously wounded when the bomb planted under his car went off, the group said, blaming the rebel Free Syrian Army for the attack.

Yarmouk has been pulled into Syria's fighting before, most recently earlier this month when clashes in and around the camp killed and wounded dozens.

The refugee camp is near two southern neighborhoods of the capital ? Tadamon and Hajar Aswad ? where rebels and government troops have clashed for weeks.

Regime forces shelled the two neighborhoods on Friday and also raided the central Damascus neighborhood of Bab Sreijeh, arresting several people there, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

State-run TV reported that a suicide attacker blew up his car in the northwestern Idlib province Friday, killing at least three people and wounding four. There were no other details.

Also Friday, visiting Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani held talks with Assad and other officials in Damascus on his way to neighboring Lebanon.

Iran is Assad's strongest ally in the region, and anti-government activists accuse Tehran of sending both weapons and fighters to Syria. Larijani reiterated Iran's support to the Syrian leadership as it fights against Western "plots being hatched" against Syria and the region, according to state-run news agency SANA.

Before meeting with Assad, Larijani met with leaders of Syria-based Palestinian factions, including the PFLP-GC, and discussed the latest Israeli-Hamas spasm of violence in Gaza that ended with an Egyptian-brokered truce on Wednesday. He pledged more Iranian assistance to Palestinians there, said Khaled Abdul-Majid, a Damascus-based Palestinian official who attended the meeting.

Speaking in Lebanon a few hours later, Larijani congratulated the Palestinian people for their "victory" in Gaza which he described as a "tsunami" against Israel.

"It has become clear that the strength and capabilities of the Palestinian resistance is here to stay," he said.

In other violence around Syria, Islamic extremists, including members of the al-Qaida inspired Jabhat al-Nusra group, battled Friday with pro-government Kurdish gunmen in the northern town of Ras al-Ayan, near the border with Turkey. The Islamic militants entered the town earlier this month and have since clashed almost daily with the Kurdish gunmen.

The Islamic militants and the Kurdish factions have added to the complexity of Syria's conflict.

When government forces withdrew from Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria in July, they were quickly replaced by Kurdish fighters from the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, who would then battle rebels when they attacked predominantly Kurdish areas. The Kurdish group is affiliated with the PKK, rebels fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast region of Turkey.

The Islamic militants, who are fighting on the side of the rebels, have played a bigger role in the Syrian conflict in recent months and many openly say they want to set up an Islamic state. The opposition is split, with some groups strongly opposed to extremism.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts, but quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

When the unrest began, the country's half-million Palestinians struggled to stay on the sidelines. But in recent months, many have started supporting the uprising although they insisted the opposition to the regime should be peaceful. Others, like the FPLP-GC, stood by Assad. Earlier this month, FPLP-GC clashed with anti-government Palestinian gunmen in Yarmouk.

In other reports, the Observatory said the body of Syrian novelist Mohammed Rashid Roweily was found late Thursday in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, nearly two months after he was kidnapped. State-TV said Roweily was "liquidated by terrorists" ? a term the government uses for the rebels.

Ruwiely, 65, was once the representative of Arab Writers' Union in Deir el-Zour and had written several novels. The Observatory said his decomposed body was found along with four other bodies, including that of a retired army officer. All were kidnapped around the same time.

Syrian authorities deny there is an uprising in the country and say the rebels are backed by foreign powers that seek to destroy the country.

Journalist Bassil Toufic Youssef, who worked for state TV, was shot dead outside his house in the capital on Thursday, said the state SANA news agency.

In other developments, Qatar, which has backed Syria's rebels in the conflict, invited the newly formed opposition coalition to appoint its ambassador to the Gulf state, the Qatari news agency reported.

The broad coalition ? called the National Coalition of the Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces ? was formed Nov. 11 in Qatar under pressure from the United States for a stronger, more united opposition body to serve as a counterweight to the more extremist forces fighting Assad's regime.

The six-national oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union's 27 foreign ministers recognized the Syrian coalition. Last week, France became the first Western nation to officially recognize the council. President Barack Obama said the U.S. isn't ready to recognize the group as a "government in exile" or to arm it.
