Crayfish species proves to be the ultimate survivor

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? One of the most invasive species on the planet is able to source food from the land as well as its usual food sources in the water, research from Queen Mary, University of London has found.

Scientists analyzed the? of red swamp crayfish in Kenya's Lake Naivasha and found that when the water level of the lake was low, the crayfish found additional food sources on land. The study was published in the journal PLoS ONE? August 3, 2012.

Lead author Dr Jonathan Grey from Queen Mary, University of London explained: "These crayfish are incredible survivors; our research shows they are able to feed off terrestrial plants directly, as well as aquatic plants -- the first study to demonstrate this.

"It has significant implications for anyone looking to introduce these species in other areas."

The research team looked at the diet of the crayfish through a technique called stable isotope analysis, where they used a natural chemical signal of diet in the species' tissues to determine what they were eating.

They found a proportion of the crayfish population had left the main lake and were surviving by burrowing in hippopotamus footprints which left small pools of water. After dark the crayfish clambered out from the footprints and grazed on the surrounding terrestrial plants.

"This study demonstrates how the red swamp crayfish is such an extraordinarily successful invader," Dr Grey said.

The red swamp crayfish has been introduced to multiple locations throughout East Africa from the 1960s to enhance fisheries and to attempt to control populations of snails which carry a parasite causing river blindness in humans.

"While they are useful to counteract other harmful species in ecosystems, they are also extremely damaging to fish populations and the balance of the food web. They eat plants, fish eggs, fly larvae, snails and leeches and since we have now shown that they are able to tap into extra resources from the land, they can sustain higher populations under adverse conditions such as low water and could cause more of a problem in a variety of environments than we initially thought."

GERD - SubmitYOURArticle.com

Omeprazole DR is used to treat gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is a condition where the acid in the stomach flows backward thus causing heart burn and might also damage the esophagus in the long run. The drug can be prescribed and is specifically used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn thus allowing time for the esophagus to heal.

It can also be used to treat ulcers and prevent ulcers from coming back. The drug works by preventing the stomach from producing too much acid. Non-prescription Omeprazole DR can be used to treat frequently occurring heart burns.

Use of the drug

Both the prescription and the non-prescription Omeprazole come in form of a delayed release capsule. They should be taken at least an hour before every meal for a period of 14 days consistently. It's vital to follow the directions on the pack. If there is anything that is not clear, you should make a point of talking to your doctor or pharmacist and getting a clearer picture.

Since the non-prescription Omeprazole DR takes about 4 days to start taking effect, you should avoid taking it in order to get immediate relief from heartburn. Prescribed Omeprazole DR should be taken up until the dose is complete even if you feel that your symptoms have subsided. The medicine can be prescribed for other uses which must be given by a doctor or your pharmacist.

Precautions

Before taking Omeprazole DR, you have to be aware that it can interact with other kinds of medications. It may interact with anticoagulants, antibiotics or other forms of medications. Therefore it is vital to tell your physicians if you are on any other kind of medication, so that they know whether if it will cause any detrimental side effects in case it interacts with other drugs.

In addition, when you are expectant, you are advised to tell your doctor immediately. Similarly, if you become pregnant when you are taking this medication, you should also inform your doctor.

Diet

There are no special dietary instructions that you have to adhere to when you are taking the medication unless the doctor advices you otherwise.

Missed dose

In case you miss a dose, do not attempt to take two of the delayed release capsules in order to compensate for the missed dose. All you have to do is just take the dose for the next time that you are required to do so.

Side effects

Omeprazole DR, just like any other drugs, has its own side effects. The side effects include: vomiting, headaches, nausea, and constipation. If these side effects begin to interfere with your regular daily routines, then it is best to consult with your doctor or a pharmacist so that they can know what to do for you.

Storage

Omeprazole DR should be kept in a tightly closed lid and out of reach from children. In addition, it should be kept dry and away from excessive heat. It is important to avoid keeping Omeprazole DR in the bathroom where it will get wet.

You will find much more info about this drug at Omeprazole dr. However, if you are seeking information on Omeprazole dosage, click here for further details.

Hiring picks up but not enough to sideline Fed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Employers hired the most workers in five months in July, but an increase in the jobless rate to 8.3 percent kept prospects of further monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve on the table.

Nonfarm payrolls rose 163,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, breaking three straight months of job gains below 100,000 and offering hope for the ailing economy.

"It's a relief we did not post another number like 75,000, but the reality is it's not night and day. It's not as though it brings us all the way back to being wildly optimistic," said Robert DiClemente, chief U.S. economist at Citigroup in New York.

While the report gave talking points to Republicans and Democrats for the upcoming general election, investors on Wall Street shrugged off the rise in the jobless rate to a five-month high and boosted stocks to their highest level since early May.

The unemployment rate rose from 8.2 percent in June, even as more people gave up the search for work and a survey of households showed a drop in employment.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday sent a stronger signal that a new round of major support could be on the way if the recovery does not pick up. The labor market has slowed after hefty gains in the winter, spelling trouble for President Barack Obama in the November election.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed 36 percent of registered voters believe Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a better plan for the economy, compared with 31 percent who have faith in Obama's policies.

Both Obama and Romney used the jobs report to plead their case to America's middle-class voters. Obama said the Republican tax plan would hurt them.

"The last thing that we should be doing is asking middle- class families who are still struggling to recover from this recession to pay more in taxes," Obama said at the White House.

Romney said the rise in the jobless rate was "a hammer blow to struggling middle-class families."

FED EASING STILL SEEN

The step-up in hiring, which beat economists' expectations of a 100,000 gain, left economists divided on whether the Fed would ease monetary policy at its September 12-13 meeting, as had been widely anticipated before the jobs report.

"We think the odds are still tilted in favor of more Fed accommodation at the September meeting, and that call obviously remains contingent on economic and financial developments over the next six weeks," said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

The increase in payrolls last month was confirmation the slump in job growth in the second quarter was largely payback for an unusually warm winter that had brought forward hiring into the early months of the year, economists said.

As such, this suggested that employment numbers for August could look more like July's, reducing the pressure for the Fed to take further action next month.

"That doesn't mean they are not going to go, it just means their sense of urgency for pulling the trigger and moving again is marginally less than it was," said Ray Stone, an economist at Stone & McCarthy Research Associates in Princeton, New Jersey.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech at the central bank's high-profile gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in late August could offer clues on the near-term course of monetary policy. He used that forum in 2010 to communicate the Fed's intention to pursue a second round of quantitative easing, or QE2.

So far this year, job growth has averaged 151,000 per month, almost the same as the monthly average last year and roughly the amount needed just to keep the unemployment rate steady.

Even if the payrolls growth buys the Fed time in September, further monetary stimulus remains in the cards given the threat to the economy from a potential tightening in fiscal policy next year and the ongoing debt troubles in Europe.

A Reuters survey published on Friday showed most Wall Street economists still expect the Fed to pump more money into the economy this year via bond purchases.

Details of the household survey, from which the unemployment rate is drawn, gave a downbeat assessment of the labor market, with the share of the population that has a job falling to near cycle lows.

In addition, the labor force participation rate, or the percentage of Americans who either have a job or are looking for one, fell to 63.7 percent last month from 63.8 percent. That is a sign of low confidence in the labor market.

Data last week showed the economy grew at an annual pace of 1.5 percent in the second quarter, also far short of the 2.5 percent rate needed to keep the unemployment rate stable.

STOCKS RALLY

U.S. stocks rallied on the July jobs report, helping the Standard & Poor's 500 index regain ground lost during its recent four-day losing streak.

Prices of U.S. Treasury debt fell and benchmark yields flirted with their highest levels in a month as the report undercut their safe-haven appeal. The dollar fell more than 1 percent against a basket of currencies.

The private sector again accounted for all the job gains, adding 172,000 new positions. Government payrolls dropped by 9,000, as cash-strapped local governments laid off teachers.

Construction employment dipped 1,000, despite a rise in home building. Factory payrolls increased 25,000, largely because of fewer layoffs in the auto sector as manufacturers kept production lines running during the month.

Within the vast services sector, employment gains were fairly widespread. From retail to professional and business services, employers added workers.

However, the momentum could slow. A second report on Friday showed the services sector grew modestly in July as new orders rose, but a measure of employment dropped to its lowest level in nearly a year.

Last month, temporary help services jobs increased by 14,100 after rising 21,100 in June. But hiring in the utility sector was weighed down by a strike at a power firm in New York last month.

Average hourly earnings increased 2 cents last month, suggesting consumer spending will struggle to regain steam after it slowed sharply in the second quarter. In the 12 months to July, earnings rose 1.7 percent.

The average workweek was unchanged at 34.5 hours.

'Unhealthy' changes in gut microbes benefit pregnant women

Friday, August 3, 2012

The composition of microbes in the gut changes dramatically during pregnancy, according to a study published by Cell Press in the August 3rd issue of the journal Cell. Although these changes are associated with metabolic disease under most circumstances, they could be beneficial in pregnant women.

"This is the first in-depth characterization of the gut microbiota associated with pregnancy," says senior study author Ruth Ley of Cornell University. "The findings suggest that our bodies have coevolved with the microbiota and may actually be using them as a tool?to help alter the mother's metabolism to support the growth of the fetus."

In nonpregnant animals, changes to gut microbe composition can cause symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including weight gain, abnormal glucose metabolism, and inflammation?an immune response that normally protects the body but can cause health problems. These symptoms also appear during pregnancy, but the underlying causes have been unclear, and few studies have examined the potential link to gut microbiota during pregnancy.

To address this question, Ley and her team obtained stool samples from 91 pregnant women. They found that gut microbes changed in composition from the first trimester to the third trimester, becoming less "normal" and less diverse over time. Health-boosting bacteria decreased in abundance, while disease-related bacteria increased in number. In addition, signs of inflammation increased over the course of the pregnancy. "The changes in gut microbes were not related to diet, so we think the immune system or hormones play a role," Ley says.

When gut microbes from pregnant women were transferred to healthy germ-free mice, animals that received microbes from the third trimester became fatter and had higher levels of inflammation markers and worse glucose metabolism than mice that received microbes from the first trimester.

"By the third trimester, the microbiota can induce changes in metabolism," Ley says. "In the context of pregnancy, these metabolic changes in the mother are healthy, because they promote energy storage in fat tissue and help support the fetus. Outside of pregnancy, however, these changes can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes and other health problems."

In Defense of the Stay-at-Home Mom | Parenting Tips For Raising ...

I was recently at a party and I kept overhearing the conversations floating between a group of women ? all commiserating with each other about how ?boring? it would be to ?just be? a stay-at-home mom. These women all work full-time outside of the home and all were agreeing that stay-at-home moms have too much time on their hands, not enough challenges, and just can?t be fulfilled. Those are fight?n words!

Stay-at-Home Moms Under Attack

This attitude has been reflected again and again, in the media, politics, and among women across the United States. Deborah Jacobs, in an article published at Forbes.com, attempts to defend moms who work at home by extolling the virtue of not judging by appearance. As a mom who works outside of the home, Jacobs repeatedly remarks in her article about how she fantasizes about the lives of stay-at-home moms who don elegant yogi attire ? but then goes on to say that

?A lot of those moms may wish they were employed outside the home but can?t find a job, or can?t find one that would pay more than the childcare they would inevitably have to compensate someone else to perform. Or maybe they are in an abusive marriage with someone who controls them, won?t let them work, and belittles them if their body fat gets higher than that of a supermodel.?

Seriously? Her reasoning for not judging stay-at-home moms is because they might not be able to get any other type of job that pays enough for a babysitter or because their husbands are abusive and controlling? That?s the kind of defense stay-at-home moms can do without.

Why Moms Choose to Stay Home

I know I don?t live in a bubble. Of the many friends I have who stay home with their kids, I don?t know any who do so because they can?t get a better job or because their husbands won?t let them leave the cocoon of the home. Stay-at-home moms choose their job because

  • They want to raise their children without outside help.
  • They are fulfilled staying home with their children and actively planning and participating in every day.
  • They consider the care of the home and family to be of significant value.
  • They can?t imagine missing out on moments they can?t get back ? 1st steps, words, etc.
  • They plan to pursue an outside career when their children are older and more independent.
  • They want to homeschool their kids.
  • It is their dream job.

Just because it is a dream doesn?t make it easy. Yes ? there are financial and future considerations. But there are those no matter which job a parent takes. The parent who takes a lower-paying job so he can get to the after-school activities on time might risk his job and financial security. The working mom who spends more time at the office than at home might risk missing out on the little moments in her children?s lives.

Probably most challenging and frustrating for parents making decisions about work and family time are the judgments of others. In yet another article that degrades stay-at-home moms, Judith Warner claims that when women choose to stay at home,

?Their position of equality with their husbands is by necessity somewhat eroded. They lose the sense of strength that comes from knowing that, come what may, they can keep themselves and their children afloat economically. They lose intellectual stimulation (assuming that they were lucky enough to have it in their jobs anyway), the easy companionship and structure of the workplace, and recognition from the outside world. And if they don?t have the money to outsource domestic jobs, their freedom from paid work comes at the cost of repetitive thankless tasks ? laundry, cleaning and the like ? that test their patience and can chip away at their self-worth. The pleasure in this life of course is time with the children, but school-age kids leave a void that many find hard to meaningfully fill.
If women were truly choosing to be home full-time, I think there would probably be a whole lot less emphasis on the hard work involved in doing so and a lot more talk about the privilege that choice would then clearly be.?

The speculations of women who judge other women, such as Warner?s, only creates a larger divide among families. Those are the families who should be able to turn to each other within in communities, but when these types of judgments are passed that fellowship is thwarted.

For more than a decade I considered myself a stay-at-home mom (even though I occasionally did freelance work, I never quantified myself as a work-at-home mom until about 5 years ago). I chose that role. I was offered my supposed dream office job, and instead pursued my real dream job ? Mom. And I never had too much time on my hands, felt I wasn?t challenged enough, or wasn?t fulfilled. Sure ? stay-at-home moms some days probably wish they just have an office in which to escape for a few tantrum-free hours, a paycheck for all of the work that they do, and respect for the value and commitment they place on their family.

Women ? for all of their love, compassion, and strength ? are the harshest judges, the coldest critics, and the cruelest when it comes to other women. Perhaps what women need is to take turns doing all jobs ? stay-at-home mom, working mom, work-at-home moms ? and then settle down and let each other choose what works best in their own unique families. I?ve done all three ? and I know where I am happiest, best for my family, and comfortable as myself. I won?t tell you what is best for your family if you don?t proceed to?assume I?m bored, unfulfilled, or unhappy with mine. Let?s get back some respect, fellow moms.
