Feedback: Drum To Lose 1,500 To 2,000 Troops

The Pentagon says Fort Drum will be losing its 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Fort Drum Commander Major General Stephen Townsend said the net loss could be between 1,500 and 2,000 soldiers.

"Even with the loss of a brigade, I don't expect the overall reduction to have a significant impact here at Fort Drum as we expect additional maneuver battalions to be assigned to our remaining brigades. After the addition of these units to the remaining brigades, we expect the net loss to be somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 soldiers," said Townsend in a prepared statement.

The Pentagon announced a reorganization of the Army Tuesday.?

The 3rd BCT will be inactivated by 2017 and its remaining troops will be absorbed into the 1st and 2nd Brigades.?

The 3rd BCT, known as the Spartans, was activated at Fort Drum in September 2004.

Since then, the Spartans have deployed three times to Afghanistan.

One more deployment is anticipated before inactivation.

"The soldiers of 3BCT epitomize the combined spirit of the legendary Spartans of ancient Greece and the courageous 10th Mountain veterans of World War-II. Their history will be recorded and remembered as our history, the heroism, expertise and sacrifice of the Spartan Brigade will not be forgotten," said Townsend.

The 3rd BCT is made up of roughly 3,500 soldiers.

Fort Drum is home to approximately 19,000 troops.

The cuts will take place over four years and represent about 9 percent of Drum's forces.

"The net loss of about 1,500 folks over a four year period with extended dwell time, like has no material impact on the mission nor any material impact on the economy," said north country Congressman Bill Owens (D. - 23rd District).

Speaking at a briefing Tuesday afternoon, Army Chief of Staff Geneeral Ray Odierno confirmed Fort Drum will lose a brigade combat team, as the Army goes from 45 to 33 BCTs total.

"We'll reinvest some of the soldiers and support personnel into the remaining brigade combat teams," Odierno said.

The cuts are part of an overall Army plan to reduce the size of its force by 80,000, a number that was agreed to as part of a budget deal in 2011.

"I am committed to ensuring Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division remain a strong asset for the Army, and for the North Country economy. I have been in direct contact with Army leaders to make sure they know the full value Fort Drum provides for our military, and will continue to fight my hardest to keep Fort Drum in a position of strength," said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D. - NY).?

The other home of the 10th, Fort Polk, Louisiana, will not lose its brigade, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu told television station KPLC.

Tuesday's cuts are separate from sequestration, which forced civilian employees to lose a day of pay over 11 days this year.

It's also separate from the "BRAC" process of closing bases, which the military wants but which Congress has blocked for the coming year.

While Tuesday's cuts were not part of sequestration, Odierno warned that if sequestration continues, Tuesday's cuts "will only be the first step."

The loss of 1,500 soldiers, while painful, is a far cry from the worst possible case that had been speculated on - 8,000 soldiers being cut.

"The announcement is disappointing. However, it is not as bad as it might have been," said Carl McLaughlin, executive director of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization.

Tuesday's news, while not welcome, is likely to be viewed as Drum and the north country having dodged potentially ruinous cuts.

Tony Keating, the civilian aide to the secretary of the Army, said, "The news was, while not good, no worse than we anticipated."

Honda orders recall because of fire risk -- for 2nd time

The 2007-2008 Honda Fit's master power window switch can short and even catch fire if it gets wet.

Honda has become the latest automaker to order a recall due to the risk of potential vehicle fires ? a problem linked to a defective power window switch that has led to major recalls at several competitors including Toyota and General Motors. Embarrassingly, it is the second time Honda has had to repair the affected vehicles for the same problem.

In fact, with the recall covering just 143,083 Honda Fit subcompacts sold in the U.S., the latest safety action is relatively modest when compared to the 2.5 million vehicles Toyota had to recall in the States for the problem last October.

The latest action involves 2007 and 2008 model-year Honda subcompacts and is linked to a defective power window module that is vulnerable to rain or spilled liquids that might over time get in through the driver?s window.

?Over time,? the maker explains in a release, ?exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire.?

That is precisely the problem Honda described in January 2010 when it conducted a recall of the same Fit models for the same problem, using a fix it now says, ?has since been determined by Honda not to be sufficiently robust to ensure that all switches would be completely sealed against all possible moisture intrusion.?

If that is not problematic enough, Honda apparently may have to subject some owners to an additional, two-step repair process. It is asking owners of the affected vehicles to bring the little hatchbacks in for inspection as soon as possible. If it appears the defective switches show obvious damage they will be replaced immediately. If not, the maker says it will send the vehicles home, and will contact them later in the year to come back for a replacement ?when sufficient supplies of the updated switch are available.?

It is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to announce large recalls because underlying components are frequently shared among a wide range of vehicles. And many suppliers sell the same, or nearly identical, components to more than one manufacturer.

As a result, Toyota was forced to recall 7.4 million cars, trucks and crossovers last autumn to deal with the same power window switch issue, including 2.5 million sold in the States. It was the Japanese giant?s largest recall ever.

General Motors has also had to order major recalls covering a wide range of products due to the switch problem, including one recall announced earlier this month involving 250,000 Chevrolet Trailblazers and GMC Envoy SUVs.A defective airbag system produced by a single supplier, Takata, similarly led to a major recall by a wide range of Asian and Western makers earlier this year.

But the Honda recall is a problem for the maker at a variety of levels. It not only is ordering a re-do of previous work but could subject some owners to multiple additional visits to the repair shop.

Compounding the situation, Honda has suffered a growing number of safety-related recalls in recent years, coming in as first or second in terms of the number of individual vehicles involved for each of the last four years.

And this year it seems on track to lead the list again, having recalled several million vehicles sold in the U.S. for problems including brake and airbag defects, as well as transmissions that can shift out of Park resulting in runaway vehicles.

Nonetheless, the maker still landed in the Top 10 according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, a measure of problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days after purchase. But the maker lagged behind Toyota and, among mainstream brands, both Chevrolet and GMC ? their parent General Motors topping the IQS list among individual manufacturers for the first time.

Berlin police shoot dead naked man wielding knife

BERLIN (AP) ? Police have fatally shot a naked man who brandished a knife at officers in a landmark Berlin fountain.

Police spokesman Stefan Redlich said passers-by reported early Friday that a man was behaving strangely and carrying a long knife in the Neptune fountain, near Berlin's city hall.

Officers tried to persuade the man to put the knife away, but instead he started cutting himself. A policeman climbed into the water to try to stop him, whereupon the man advanced on the officer with the knife.

Another officer shot the man after he ignored calls to back off. He died at the scene.

Police say an autopsy was being conducted to determine whether the man, apparently aged around 20, died from the shot or his self-inflicted injuries.

Obama uncertain about visit with Nelson Mandela

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) ? President Barack Obama, in the midst of a historic tour of Africa, says he isn't certain about whether he'll be able to visit gravely ill Nelson Mandela when he arrives in South Africa.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route from Dakar, Senegal to Johannesburg, Obama said, "We'll see what the situation is when we land."

Obama adds, quote, "I don't need a photo op and the last thing I want to do is to be in any way obtrusive at a time when the family is concerned with Nelson Mandela's condition."

He noted that his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha had previously met Mandela, who is 94. Mandela led the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

He was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8 with what authorities said at the time was a lingering lung infection.

"I think the main message we'll want to deliver, if not directly to him, but to his family, is simply profound gratitude for his leadership all these years," said Obama, "and that the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him his family and his country."

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? The first week of George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial wrapped up with testimony from two neighbors and a police officer that seemed to bolster the defense's argument that he was pinned on his back by Trayvon Martin before shooting the teen.

Neighbor Jonathan Good testified Friday that it appeared the unarmed teen was straddling the neighborhood watch volunteer, while another neighbor, Jonathan Manalo, said Zimmerman seemed credible when he said just after the fight that he shot Martin in self-defense. Officer Tim Smith testified that Zimmerman's back side was covered in grass and wetter than his front side.

All three were called as witnesses for prosecutors who are trying to convict him of second-degree murder.

Good, who had perhaps the best view of any witness, said he did not see anyone's head being slammed into the concrete sidewalk, as Zimmerman claims Martin did to him. Good initially testified that it appeared "there were strikes being thrown, punches being thrown," but during detailed questioning he said he saw only "downward" arm movements being made.

Zimmerman has claimed that he fatally shot 17-year-old Martin in February 2012 in self-defense as the Miami-area teen was banging his head into the concrete sidewalk behind the townhomes in a gated community.

Under prosecution questioning, Good said he never saw anyone being attacked that way. Good said he heard a noise behind his townhome and he saw what looked like a tussle when he stepped out onto his patio. He said he yelled: "What's going on? Stop it."

Good testified he saw a person in black clothing on top of another person with "white or red" clothing. He said he couldn't see faces but it looked like the person on the bottom had lighter skin. Martin was black and was wearing a dark hoodie. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic and was wearing a red jacket. Good was back inside calling 911 when he heard a gunshot.

"It looked like there were strikes being thrown, punches being thrown," Good said.

Later, under cross-examination, he said that it looked like the person on top was straddling the person on bottom in a mixed-martial arts move known as "ground and pound." When defense attorney Mark O'Mara asked him if the person on top was Martin, Good said, "Correct, that's what it looked like." Good also said the person on the bottom yelled for help.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. Zimmerman followed Martin in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight.

Zimmerman has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and their supporters have claimed.

Manalo, whose wife had testified earlier in the week, was the first neighbor to step outside and see what happened with his flashlight after he heard a gunshot. He took cellphone photos of a bloodied Zimmerman and Martin's body, and those photos were shown to jurors on Friday. Manalo also described Martin's hands as being under his body.

Manalo said Zimmerman didn't appear shocked and acted calmly. After police officers arrived and handcuffed Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer asked Manalo to call his wife and tell her what happened.

Manalo started to tell Zimmerman's wife that her husband had been involved in a shooting and was being questioned by police when "he cut me off and said, 'Just tell her I shot someone,'" Manalo said.

Under cross-examination, Manalo said when he asked Zimmerman what happened, the neighborhood watch volunteer told him, "I was defending myself and I shot him."

"From what you could tell at that moment, that seemed completely true?" asked defense attorney Don West.

"Yes," Manalo said.

Smith, the police officer, testified that when he saw Zimmerman after the shooting, the neighborhood watch volunteer's backside was covered in grass and wetter than his front side, bolstering defense attorneys' contention that Martin was on top of Zimmerman.

As he walked to the squad car after he had been handcuffed, Zimmerman told the officer that "he was yelling for help and nobody would come help him," Smith said.

"It was almost a defeated ... a confused look on his face," Smith said.

Smith said Zimmerman described himself as "lightheaded" during the drive to Sanford Police Station but declined an offer to take him to a hospital.

The physician's assistant who treated Zimmerman the next day said that Zimmerman complained of feeling nauseated upon reflecting what had happened. But Lindzee Folgate attributed that to psychological factors rather than any physical condition. She also said it appeared his nose was broken, but it was impossible to say for sure since no X-rays were taken. She recommended he see an ear-and-nose doctor and a psychologist.

When O'Mara asked if abrasions on his head were consistent with someone who had his had slammed into concrete, Folgate said, "it could be consistent, yes."

She also testified that Zimmerman had written on a form reciting his medical history that he was exercising three times a week by doing mixed martial arts, a statement that prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda asked her to repeat.

Paramedic Stacy Livingston, who responded to the shooting scene, testified Zimmerman had a swollen, bleeding nose and two cuts on the back of his head an inch long. When O'Mara asked if Zimmerman should have been concerned with his medical well-being because of his injuries, Livingston said, "Possibly."

When photos of Martin's body were shown on a courtroom projector during Livingston's testimony, Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, looked away and blinked back tears.

The British Geological Survey released a report?on Thursday?that provided a revised estimate for shale gas resources in the North of England. The new estimate is double the old one.

The shale formation, known as the Bowland shale formation has been calculated to hold around 1,300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Considering that BP reports British consumption as 2.76 trillion cubic feet in 2012, this formation is enough to transform the UK energy market, even though only 10-15 percent of shale gas reserves is generally recoverable.

Danny Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, stated that??today?s news from the Geological Survey confirms 1,300 trillion cubic feet of (shale resources), which is double previous estimates.?

Fracking has come under some scrutiny by environmentalists and local communities who are worried that it could lead to earthquakes and contamination of ground water and drinking water supplies.

To try and appease local communities the government has said that companies must invest ?100,000 in communities near to fracking wells, along with a further one percent of all revenues earned from each production site.

Energy Minister Michael Fallon, explained that??this will provide a welcome boost for communities who will host shale exploration and production as well as offering strong assurances that operators will engage with them and work to the highest health, safety and environmental standards.?

Britain?s shale industry is still very young and as it has not been determined whether any gas can be economically extracted, it may never actually grow to maturity.

A new social game called Revealers is launching today, and it?s betting on the feature of letting players add content to the game to make it more than a flash in the pan hit.

Israeli founder Muly Litvak has an extensive background in entertainment, so we?ll see how his experience translates into gaming.

Here?s how it works: players select to play against their Facebook friends or against a random opponent and are shown a photo fully obscured by a grid of squares. Both players are given four hints to help figure out what the picture is. As the picture uncovers square by square, the challenge is to identify the photo before your opponent.

Users can then add their own photos and hints to change the game up. Eventually there will be private categories between friends, but for now games are scanned for relevancy in the world or country.

Winners earn ?brain cells? and advance to higher ?brain levels? accordingly. You can only play against another user if they have challenged you back.

It?s a pretty simple game, so we?ll see if that ? and the vanity aspect of getting to upload your own photos ? will be enough to make it as addictive as Litvak is hoping.

Iraq official says Baghdad open to US military aid

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq is open to greater American military cooperation as U.S. commanders explore ways to boost security assistance to the country, a top Iraqi official said Thursday as a fresh wave of bombings claimed 16 lives.

The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, has recommended that military American commanders look for ways to help improve the military capabilities of Iraq and Lebanon, which both face the risk of spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Dempsey said Wednesday that the assistance would not involve sending U.S. combat troops, but could involve the U.S. sending in training teams and accelerating sales of weapons and equipment.

The last American combat troops left Iraq in December 2011, ending a nearly nine-year war that cost nearly 4,500 American and more than 100,000 Iraqi lives.

About 100 military and civilian Department of Defense personnel remain in Iraq as an arm of the American Embassy to act as liaisons with the Iraqi government and facilitate arms sales. The U.S. has similar offices in other countries.

Ali al-Moussawi, the media adviser for Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, told The Associated Press that Baghdad would welcome increased arms sales and faster weapons deliveries along with U.S. training teams to help it confront rising regional instability and terrorist threats.

"We welcome this kind of cooperation and we consider it a part of the existing agreement between us," al-Moussawi said when asked about Dempsey's comments.

"Because of the high risks the region faces, I think there should be bigger cooperation and coordination between all countries threatened by terrorism."

Iraq is struggling to contain a resurgent al-Qaida that is one of the main drivers behind the country's worst uptick in violence in half a decade. More than 2,000 people have been killed in car bombings and other violent attacks in Iraq since the start of April.

More violence rocked Iraq late Thursday when bombs struck cafes in and around Baghdad, killing 16 and wounding dozens. The attacks struck in quick succession at the start of the local weekend while the cafes were filled with patrons watching a soccer match.

Police reported five people killed and 17 wounded in Baghdad's largely Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah, and another three dead and 14 wounded in Shiite-dominated Umm al-Maalif, in the southwestern suburbs of the capital.

Another blast struck the Shiite town of Jbala, about 50 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad, killing 8 and wounding 25.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to journalists.

The upsurge in violence comes as Iraqi fighters have been traveling to fight on both sides of Syria's civil war. The Iraqi branch of al-Qaida is pushing to make itself a player in the conflict, and now calls itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to highlight its cross-border ambitions.

Iraq has acquired billions of dollars' worth of American-made military equipment, including howitzers, armored personnel carriers and Abrams tanks in recent years.

It has yet to receive the first of as many as 36 F-16 fighter jets it has ordered, and Baghdad has been pressing U.S. officials to speed delivery of the warplanes.

Also on Thursday, a spokesman for Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission said a voting list backed by influential Sunni politicians has won the biggest single bloc of seats in provincial elections in the Sunni-dominated province of Anbar.

Safaa al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the Independent High Electoral commission, said the United list led by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi won 8 of 30 seats in Anbar's provincial council. A bloc backed by al-Maliki came in second with five seats.

The western province of Anbar, a former al-Qaida stronghold, has been the center of anti-government rallies protesting what Sunnis say is their second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government.

Residents in Anbar and neighboring Ninevah province voted last week in local elections that had been delayed due to security concerns.

Scientists at North Carolina State University have invented remote-controlled cockroaches that they expect will be used as search-and-rescue animals, sent to disaster zones to hunt for survivors and relay back information that will help to map the damage.

?Our aim was to determine whether we could create a wireless biological interface with cockroaches, which are robust and able to infiltrate small spaces,? said Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at North Carolina State and co-author of the paper, presented at the Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society.

?Ultimately, we think this will allow us to create a mobile web of smart sensors that uses cockroaches to collect and transmit information, such as finding survivors in a building that?s been destroyed by an earthquake,? he said.

To create a cyborg cockroach, scientists embed a chip with a wireless receiver and transmitter onto a Madagascar Hissing Cockroack, making a somewhat endearing-looking little cockroach backpack. That backpack is wired to the cyborg?s antennae and its sensory organs on its abdomen and can trick the hapless animal into believing that it has bumped into a wall and must turn. In simulating walls, the scientists can effectively steer the insect.

Researchers then use Microsoft's motion-sensing Xbox device, Kinect, to guide the animal on a pre-planned route, as well as to track the cyborg insect and make adjustments in its direction as more information is collected about its location, Wired said.?

Earlier this month, scientists launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the design of cockroaches that schoolchildren can control with their smartphone, sending signals to backpacks affixed to the mastered animals.

In a video of the new Kinect system, a cockroach is instructed to follow a sinusoidal route through a combination of signals to turn first continuously slightly right as it crawls, then left.

For the moment, that?s about all the robo-roach can do. But scientists expect that that basic remote control feat can be put toward sending cockroaches into disaster zones inaccessible to human rescuers, like Gandalf?s eagles dispatched to Mordor.?

Another day another beating for gold. The yellow metal fell another 3.5% overnight bringing it to prices unseen for almost three years. The SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) is now down over 25% year-to-date as retail investors find themselves on the wrong side of what is suddenly looking like one of the great boom-bust cycles in precious metal history.

As for what's driving the plummet, MercBloc president Dan Dicker says it's all about Main Street coming to the sudden realization that there is no safety whatsoever in gold. "When the retail customer gets frightened, they get frightened in a hurry and they get frightened for big numbers," Dicker says in the attached clip.

Retail investors are scared for good reasons. Gold is an investment that should have worked when the inflation which was supposed to run rampant due to currency devaluation kicked into high gear. As the inflation thesis gets debunked gold is getting mercilessly hammered. There just isn't a compelling fundamental reason to own gold and the chart is broken. The only thing left to do is hope and panic; usually in that order.

Dicker makes the point that the GLD, as a massive ETF, is forced to buy and sell physical gold holdings as the size of the fund fluctuates. When sellers start dumping the GLD it forces banks to go into the market and sell physical gold into a weak market. The result is what Dicker calls a "cyclical death spiral" that makes calling a bottom an exercise in futility.

Those looking to buy the dip in gold are fighting the trend, a tide of so called "weak-hand" sellers and a broken fundamental investment thesis. The market doesn't give out badges for bravery; hundreds of years of gold trading history suggests there are better places to put your money right now.

South African archbishop prays for Mandela, wishes for peaceful "end" for former president

JOHANNESBURG - A South African archbishop who visited Nelson Mandela in a hospital has offered a prayer in which he wishes for a "peaceful, perfect, end" for the former president and anti-apartheid leader.

Thabo Makgoba, the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, posted the prayer on Facebook on Tuesday night after visiting the 94-year-old Mandela, who is critically ill.

In the prayer, Makgoba asks for courage to be granted to Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, and others who love him "at this hard time of watching and waiting."

The archbishop says: "Grant him, we pray, a quiet night and a peaceful, perfect, end."

He also appeals for divine guidance for the doctors treating Mandela, who was taken to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8 with what the government described as a lung infection.

Giant fountains of hot rock under central Africa and the central Pacific that have apparently remained stationary for at least 250 million years are helping drive the movements of the massive tectonic plates making up Earth's surface, researchers say.

Below the rocky layer that makes up Earth's outermost skin, known as the lithosphere, is the searing hot rock of the mantle layer. The way this viscous rock flows drives movements in Earth's surface, resulting in the birth and death of supercontinents and the building of mountains when tectonic plates smash together.

Pinpointing what patterns might exist in mantle flow has proved difficult because of uncertainty in how to interpret scans of the inner Earth. Now researchers find they can deduce mantle flow patterns through another route ? by looking at the way tectonic plates have drifted over the eons, as this drift is based on how the viscous innards of the planet have flowed.

"This knowledge will help us understand how mantle dynamics affect processes such as mountain-building and volcanism that have shaped our planet over geologic time," researcher Clinton Conrad, a geophysicist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, told LiveScience's OurAmazingPlanet.

'Fascinating' flow
Conrad and his team analyzed past models of the motions of tectonic plates for the past 250 million years, when Earth's landmasses were combined into the supercontinent Pangaea. They next inferred how the mantle should have churned underneath those plates to produce those movements.

The investigators discovered tectonic plates are diverging away from points beneath central Africa and the central Pacific. These points have apparently remained stationary for the past quarter-billion years despite continuing formation and destruction of seafloor and supercontinents at the surface.

"I found it fascinating that the basic flow patterns in such a complicated and obscure place such as the mantle could be so simple and stable over geologic time," Conrad said.

The researchers suggest these points are essentially giant stable upwellings of hot rock that rise up from the lowermost mantle and drive mantle flow and plate tectonics.

"The dynamics of these giant upwellings are not well understood ? their stability is thus an interesting feature that helps to define them," Conrad said. "Typically, upwellings in the mantle form very thin 'plumes' that are only a few hundred kilometers across, such as the plume that is thought to be rising beneath Hawaii. Giant plumes, on the other hand, which are thousands of kilometers across, tend not to be as stable as smaller plumes."

Giant upwellings apparently result from the interactions of two different materials in the mantle ? "a dense one below and a lighter one above," Conrad said. "Models do not typically show these upwellings to remain stably positioned, so that is something new."

'Uncertain mechanism'
One factor that might help keep these upwellings stable over long times "is that they may be chemically different than the surrounding mantle ? they may be chemically a little bit denser, which keeps them from fully rising to the top of the mantle," Conrad said. However, this requires some as-yet-uncertain mechanism to keep such material separate from the rest of the mantle over millions of years, he said.

Some have speculated the location of these upwellings might have something to do with the rotation of the Earth, which is adjusting itself to position these relatively dense spots on its equator, much like how tightrope walkers might hold their arms out to keep more stable.

"However, the details of this have not been well worked out yet," Conrad said.

Incidentally, the so-called plate tectonic dipole, "the one point on the Earth toward which all the plates are on average converging, happens to be in North Korea!" Conrad wrote in an email.

In the future, Conrad and his colleagues would like to peer even further back in time, "to 500 million years or so," he said, to see if the upwellings were in place then as well.

The scientists will detail their findings in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Syrian rebels renew fight for Aleppo

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled President Bashar al-Assad's forces in and around the northern city of Aleppo on Sunday, seeking to reverse gains made by loyalist forces in the commercial hub over the last two months, activists said.

The fighting, by a variety of insurgent groups, happened as France urged moderate rebels to wrest territory back from radical Islamists whose role in the fight to topple Assad poses a dilemma for Western countries concerned that arms shipments could fall into the hands of people it considers terrorists.

The 11 Western and Arab countries known as the "Friends of Syria" agreed on Saturday to give urgent military support to the rebels, channeled through the Western-backed Supreme Military Council in a bid to prevent arms getting to Islamist radicals.

But radical forces showed they remained formidable on Sunday when the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham brigade detonated a car bomb at a roadblock at an entrance to Aleppo killing at least 12 loyalist soldiers, according to the opposition Aleppo News Network and other activists in the city.

Aleppo, 35 km (20 miles) south of Turkey, has been contested since July last year, when rebel brigades entered the city and captured about half of it. In recent weeks, Assad has focused his military campaign on recapturing rebel-held areas.

He has also been expanding control of the central province of Homs after capturing a strategic town on the border with Lebanon, and has used heavy bombardment and siege warfare to contain rebels dug in around the capital, according to opposition sources and diplomats monitoring the conflict.

Firas Fuleifel, with the moderate Islamist al-Farouq Brigade, said six rebel fighters were killed in fighting in Aleppo in the last day.

WIN BACK CONTROL

French President Francois Hollande, whose country has been at the forefront of Western efforts to re-organize and back the opposition, said moderate rebels must take territory held by radical Islamists whose involvement in the conflict, he said, gives Bashar al-Assad a pretext for more violence.

"The opposition needs to win back control of these areas ... they have fallen into the hands of extremists," Hollande told a news conference in the Doha a day after the Friends of Syria met in the Qatari capital.

"If it seems that extremist groups are present and tomorrow they could be the beneficiaries of a chaotic situation, it will be Bashar al-Assad who will seize on this pretext to continue the massacre," Hollande said.

In Damascus, the Ahrar al-Sham and the Islamist Tawhid al-Asima brigades detonated a car bomb in an area known as Mezze 86, inhabited by members of Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has controlled Syria since the 1960s. Two people were killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

Rebels also attacked two security compounds in Damascus, killing at least five people, sources in the capital said.

In regional repercussions of the increasingly sectarian Syrian conflict, four Lebanese soldiers were killed in clashes with followers of a Sunni Islamist cleric who is a critic of the role of Hezbollah - the Shi'ite Lebanese group - in giving military support to Assad.

Sources in the city said the fighting broke out when a follower of Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir was arrested at an army roadblock in Sidon, 40 km (28 miles) south of Beirut.

The clashes were followed by fighting between Hezbollah members based in the mostly Sunni city and Assir's followers in which automatic weapons and shoulder fired rockets were used, the sources said.

MILAN, Italy ??Cavalli Group, the Italian fashion house that dressed actress Jennifer Hudson at the Oscars, ruled out selling a stake any time soon, resisting interest from industry buyers, wealthy families and private-equity firms.

Gianni Versace SpA, an Italian maker of $950 flower-print jeans, said yesterday it expects to decide as soon as October if it will sell a minority stake publicly or privately to fund growth. Worldwide luxury sales will rise 4 percent to 5 percent this year as booming demand in Southeast Asia offsets a slowdown in China and Europe, Bain & Co. estimates.

Sales in Cavalli?s stores increased 23 percent between January and the first week of June, or 11 percent on a like-for- like basis, Brozzetti said, citing strong demand in North America, northern Europe and Asia. Southern Europe is beginning to recover after a tough start to the year, he also said.

The maker of $2,305 rayon jackets expects to register similar retail revenue growth in the second half of the year as it increases its store count to about 200, Brozzetti said.

Revenue reached 185 million euros in 2012. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization represented 11 percent of revenue.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? By joining with a much bigger Catholic health system, a prominent Orange County hospital hopes to enhance patients' access to a host of services ? except one.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, based in Newport Beach, started banning elective abortions this year after reaching an agreement to affiliate with St. Joseph Health, riling some doctors and women's advocates.

The controversy has fueled a feisty debate in local editorial pages and prompted a rally outside the hospital, making the Southern California suburbs the latest scene of a culture clash occurring across the country as Catholic and non-Catholic hospitals strike deals in a wave of health care industry mergers.

Women's health advocates say affiliations between non-Catholic and Catholic hospitals have squelched abortions in a number of locations, and full-blown mergers have also affected health services such as sterilization and contraception.

Hoag has a flagship 485-bed hospital with sweeping Pacific Ocean views and another hospital in nearby Irvine. It joined with Irvine-based St. Joseph Health, which has 14 acute care hospitals in California and Texas, after winning state approval to form a regional health care system called Covenant Health Network.

The economic downturn and health care overhaul have driven many nonprofit hospitals to form partnerships or merge entirely in recent years, and cultural conflicts related to religion, teaching style or other differences often need to be hashed out for the ventures to succeed, said Lisa Goldstein, associate managing director of the not-for-profit hospital ratings team at Moody's.

Dr. Richard Afable, Hoag's former president who now heads Covenant, said Hoag took a closer look at its abortion practices because it was joining with a Catholic health system where the procedure isn't allowed.

Afable said the hospital decided to cease performing elective abortions because it does so few of them anyway ? only about 100 a year. He said Hoag will continue to perform abortions when medically indicated and that most elective abortions are done in a doctor's office or could be better performed at a center with a higher volume of the procedures.

"We looked very closely at all the things we do that are generally not supported at Catholic hospitals," he said. "We are not limiting any physician from conducting their medical practice in any way they would like. If a physician wants to do an elective abortion, there are places and locations where they can conduct that."

Obstetrician Dr. Richard Agnew said he worries Hoag may start to weed out other services over time. He also said he doesn't feel his patients who choose abortion should be shuffled off to a Planned Parenthood or different hospital, noting most are women who wanted to get pregnant but are carrying a fetus with genetic abnormalities and need a hospital level of care.

"It's not like they're doing anything illegal," Agnew said. "It's bad enough for them to have to make a decision."

Hospitals steeped in different faith traditions have had to contend with public concern over mergers and affiliations in states including Connecticut, Kentucky and Washington. The debate has most often surfaced in mergers involving Catholic hospitals due to the church's directives on issues ranging from abortion and birth control to end-of-life decisions.

In suburban Philadelphia, two hospitals, Abington and Holy Redeemer, called off a proposed partnership after community members were upset the plan would have ended abortions at Abington.

Catholic facilities account for more than one fifth of the country's hospital admissions, according to the Catholic Health Association.

Most commonly, affiliation agreements have led non-Catholic hospitals to stop providing abortions, while mergers and acquisitions have also led some institutions to stop performing other services, such as tubal ligation, said Sheila Reynertson, advocacy coordinator for New York-based Merger Watch, which tracks the effects of mergers between religious and secular hospitals on reproductive and other health services.

Lori Vandermeir, president of the National Organization for Women's Orange County chapter, said she worries the spate of hospital mergers will affect women's access to abortion even when no laws have changed.

"They have the ability to reset abortion-access behind the scenes, without the legislature being involved," she said.

In St. Joseph's statement of common values, the health system states that "direct abortion and physician assisted suicide are not part of St. Joseph Health services."

Afable said there have been no other changes to procedures offered at either hospital, noting Hoag will continue to perform sterilizations and provide contraception. He said no changes would be made to women's health services at Hoag for at least a decade under the agreement.

Pro-abortion rights groups staged a rally outside the hospital Thursday, while anti-abortion advocates who welcomed Hoag's decision held a counterdemonstration. The controversy has also sparked a spirited debate in the editorial pages of local newspapers.

Tom Johnson, a local businessman, wrote in the Orange County Register that while he supports abortion rights he doesn't see a problem with hospitals limiting their offerings. He recalled that he had to travel to Los Angeles for a kidney transplant eight years ago because Hoag did not perform the procedure.

"I'm 100 percent in favor of a woman's right to choose. Not 50 percent, not 75 percent - 100 percent," Johnson wrote in a guest column in the newspaper. "But I also, at the same time, respect the right of Hoag Hospital to choose what services it will provide and what services it will not."

Kuroda shut down Los Angeles into the seventh inning, Ichiro Suzuki homered and drove in three runs, and the New York Yankees spoiled Mattingly's return to the Bronx with a 6-4 victory over the sloppy Dodgers in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

"Once the game started I didn't really focus too much on who I was facing," Kuroda said through a translator. "I was trying to contribute for the Yankees."

Lyle Overbay hit a two-run double against South Korean rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-3) in the first game in New York between the old October rivals since Los Angeles clinched the 1981 World Series title with a win in Game 6 at the original Yankee Stadium. The teams that have met in a record 11 World Series - eight won by the Yankees - never faced off in interleague play at the Stadium before this week.

Baseball's two injury battered $200 million teams have to pack a two-game series into one day because rain postponed Tuesday night's opener. Los Angeles' Chris Capuano was activated off the disabled list after the first game and was scheduled to start the nightcap against New York's Phil Hughes.

Cuban rookie Yasiel Puig put on quite a show for a vocal contingent of Dodgers fans. He led off the eighth by daringly stretching a liner to left-center into a double - he got thrown out trying a similar play in the first. He also tried to throw a runner out at first on a single to right field in the second inning and struck out to end the game against Mariano Rivera.

"His talent's great and his aggressiveness we love, because you love the way he plays," Mattingly said. "But we've got to make sure that we continue to teach, and for him to understand the right times to take those chances."

Suzuki made a leaping catch at the wall in right field for the first out of the eighth before Hanley Ramirez connected for a two-run homer off Preston Claiborne for his fourth hit of the game to cut the lead to 6-4. The Yankees had scored three times in the seventh thanks in part to reliever Ronald Belisario's two errors on one play. The Dodgers made four errors overall.

David Robertson relieved Claiborne and walked his first two batters before ending the inning without further damage. Rivera was perfect in the ninth for his 25th save, ending hopes that Mattingly's return to the city where No. 23 starred from 1982-95 would be a success.

He may be wearing the wrong shade of blue now but Yankees fans still love Mattingly.

There was the "Donnie Baseball!" chant from the Bleacher Creatures for the 1985 AL MVP ahead of the bottom of the first and a video tribute for a career enshrined with a plaque in Monument Park before the Yankees scored twice in the second. Both times Mattingly answered the applause with a wave of the cap from the visitors' dugout.

"It means a lot. It's always been part of me," Mattingly said. "I played my whole career here, so it's obviously a good feeling when people appreciate the way you played and acted."

The Yankees quickly turned the attention back onto the field, scoring twice in the second against Ryu. After Neal and Suzuki led off with singles and advanced on David Adams' sacrifice, Overbay laced a line drive over center fielder Andre Ethier's head for the 2-0 lead.

Kuroda (7-5), who began his Major League career with the Dodgers in 2008 and won 41 games for them before coming to New York for 2012, limited Los Angeles to five hits and helped himself by catching a liner to start a double play with runners on second and third in the fourth before the seventh. He was lifted after giving up A.J. Ellis' sacrifice fly and former Yankees utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr.'s two-out, RBI pinch-hit single in the seventh.

Kuroda allowed eight hits overall and two runs.

The Yankees added three more in the bottom half of the seventh, helped when, with runners on first and second, Belisario let Vernon Wells' meek pop in front of the mound drop for an error. Jayson Nix advanced to third on the drop and scored when Belisario threw the ball into center field trying to get Robinson Cano at second base. Belisario hit Neal with a pitch, then Suzuki greeted Paco Rodriguez with a blooped two-run single to make it 6-2.

"It was just a combination of us not executing when we needed to make the plays," Ellis said of the loss.

Suzuki homered for the first time this season in the sixth off Ryu, who gave up three runs and five hits.

Suzuki had three hits for his fourth multihit game in his last six games, but is not sure he's finally done with a season-long slump.

"I have no idea," Suzuki said through a translator. "Ask a fortune teller."

This is an odd film (creepier than it knows), and even if you feel the atmospheric company of Dunham-ism, with a little of Whit Stillman, Henry Jaglom, and Woody Allen, the core influence on Noah Baumbach's film is fifty years older or more.

Baumbach usually builds his films around difficult protagonists, but Frances is entirely endearing, at once silly and deep, hopeless and promising.

The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.

A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...

The movie's a love letter to an actress and her character, but by the end you may feel like an intervention is more in order.

The obvious love of New York City echoes Woody Allen at his best. But "Frances Ha" is very much its own film, a story of life and love and messy rooms.

Gerwig's deft screwball timing turns every disaster into a grace note. This may be a comedy of awkwardness, but rather than curl, your toes will tap.

...if you hold your nose and simply wallow through the stench of self-aggrandizement, you'll be rewarded with an experience that will actually tug on your emotions.

Frances Ha provides a sharp, fleet, and very funny look at female friendship and the acceptance of adult responsibilities.

This is very minimalist storytelling much of which feels improvised in front of the camera. The film is more of a character situation than a character story.

Frances Ha is endearing, kind and, in many ways, Noah Baumbach's best movie to date.

It's a film that bears all of the zingy dialogue and sharp characterizations of Baumbach's other films ("The Squid and the Whale," "Greenberg") but with more of a generosity of spirit towards its characters.

Funny and touching, Frances Ha may very well be the most eloquent take yet on a generation in flux.

The light Frances Ha provides skittish moments of heartbreak and confusion on the humorous path to adulthood, but it sends a comforting message that our fate may use the same language as our dreams even if it doesn't tell the same story.
