How often do you play with your dog? Be honest, now ? in our modern age of gadgets and gizmos aplenty, whosits and whatsits galore, who really has the time or patience to teach a dog the finer points of fetch, or even drag it unwillingly around a noisy city block as if it was a debtor being taken to Jabba the Hutt to discuss the small matter of repaying a loan? Ah, but there?s always a quick solution for a complicated modern problem, and that solution might be, in this case, to get your sad, attention-starved dog a temporary tattoo. The idea of tattooing a dog at first seems risible, if not openly cruel. Dogs don?t need to have their skin stained with ugly roses or barbed-wire armbands ? they?re dogs. Herbalife says results will prove Ackman wrong

(Reuters) - Herbalife Ltd posted surprisingly strong quarterly earnings and raised its full-year profit forecast on Monday, putting pressure on high-profile investor Bill Ackman, who is betting against the nutritional products company.
Ackman's Pershing Square Capital has a $1 billion bet against the "multi-level marketer" whose weight loss products are sold through a network of independent individuals. In recent months Ackman has called the Los Angeles-based company "a pyramid scheme" and predicted that its shares will eventually be worthless.
Herbalife executives, who have been befriended by hedge fund titan Carl Icahn, told Reuters that the company's global growth speaks for itself.
"The proof is in the results. Ultimately people will realize that Bill Ackman's reckless bet is based on an unfounded hypothesis," Herbalife President Des Walsh told Reuters in an interview.
"The resilience of our customer base and our distributor base will continue to show that he's wrong and dead wrong," Walsh said.
BIG BEAT
Herbalife's first quarter net income grew to $118.9 million, or $1.10 per share, in the first quarter, compared with $108.2 million, or 88 cents per share, a year earlier.
Excluding a hit from the devaluation of Venezuela's currency and expenses related to defending the company from criticism by Ackman and other high-profile investors, the company earned $1.27 a share during the quarter - 20 cents more than the average of analysts' estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Net sales rose 17 percent to $1.1 billion.
Based on those results, Herbalife raised its 2013 forecast for adjusted earnings per share to a range of $4.60 to $4.80 from $4.45 to $4.65 previously.
Herbalife shares, which have been volatile due to the debate over its future, slipped 0.9 percent to $38.42 in extended trading. The shares plummeted from about $45 to about $25 at the time of Ackman's attack in December.
Icahn, another closely watched investor, rushed to the firm's defense - taking a stake and putting two representatives on the Herbalife board in February.
But the company also disclosed in February that its operations have been the subject of an inquiry by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement since late last year.
It was later discovered that a senior KPMG auditor for Herbalife was leaking nonpublic information about the company in exchange for money, forcing the firm to resign from Herbalife's service.

Alibaba pushes into social networking with Weibo investment

(Reuters) - Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, which has been trying to break into the social networking market, has acquired an 18 percent stake in web portal Sina Corp's microblogging service Weibo for about $586 million.
Sina has also granted Alibaba the option to increase its stake in Weibo to 30 percent within a stipulated time, which it did not specify.
Sina's U.S.-listed shares jumped 18 percent to $59.38 in early trading on Monday.
The deal, which values Weibo at over $3 billion, will provide more advertising revenue to Weibo as Sina tries to monetize the service and increase its lead over rival Tencent Holdings' social messaging product, WeChat.
Weibo, China's version of Twitter, has grown at a fast clip since its launch in 2009 and has gained from the blockage of Twitter by the Chinese government.
More than 500 million Chinese use Weibo to opine on everything from Korean soap operas to China's latest political intrigue.
The alliance is expected to generate about $380 million in advertising and social commerce services revenue for Weibo over the next three years, Sina said in a statement.
The deal should drive more web traffic to Alibaba's Taobao Marketplace, China's largest e-commerce website with a consumer focus.
Alibaba's business model is based on online advertising and subscription fees.
Unlisted Alibaba, controlled by Chinese internet entrepreneur Jack Ma, also runs Alibaba.com, the country's largest business-to-business commerce platform, and Alipay, an online payment platform.
Ma, one of China's best known corporate leaders, reckoned to be worth $3.4 billion by Forbes late last year, built his e-commerce empire from scratch.
He plans to step down as CEO on May 10 and become executive chairman. Alibaba is likely to list its shares in Hong Kong late this year or early next year, according to industry sources.
Alibaba has kept mum about its IPO plans, but its listing could be a windfall for Yahoo Inc, which owns nearly a quarter of the company.
Alibaba and Weibo will work on user account connectivity, data exchange, online payments and online marketing, Sina said in a statement.

FBI director faces criticism of bureau again

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As he nears the end of a dozen years as director of the FBI, Robert Mueller finds himself defending the agency over its handling of two high-profile cases. It is a familiar spot for the low-key ex-Marine.
At the request of President Barack Obama, Mueller stayed on for two years beyond the job's 10-year term to help stabilize law enforcement's fight against domestic and international threats to U.S. security. Recent events - the bombing at the Boston Marathon and ricin-laced letters sent to Obama and a U.S. senator - have left Mueller dealing with suggestions that agency missteps may have added to the damage.
Mueller, 68, who is scheduled to leave office in early September, has endured many congressional attacks against his agency's performance. While he is not universally praised on Capitol Hill, he has won enough bipartisan support to be considered a success.
Tellingly, it was a target of the 2001 anthrax letters - Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont - who told Mueller at a 2008 hearing that he seriously doubted the findings of the FBI's long and complicated anthrax investigation. But three years later, Leahy as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman helped Mueller win a two-year extension of his term.
The FBI chief gets far milder treatment than some other prominent members of the 0bama administration, such as U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. She came under heavy fire from Republicans for remarks she made after the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi in which four Americans were killed, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.
In Washington, where making enemies is easy, Mueller wins high scores from members of Congress for his competence, even as he guided a vast expansion of FBI powers since the hijacked plane attacks of September 11, 2001.
"I believe he is well liked, even though I find fault with a lot of his policies, or how he does things," Senator Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, said in an interview. "I think he's well intentioned ... it's kind of difficult for me to criticize him even when there is a screw-up," Grassley added.
This month, the FBI has faced fresh assaults over its failure to spot the potential danger from Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a suspect in the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, after Russia asked the bureau to investigate him two years ago. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in a police shootout and his brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has been charged in the bombings that killed three people and injured more than 200.
Two senior Republican lawmakers complained Tamerlan Tsarnaev was yet another in a series of cases in which a person investigated by the agency had later taken part in attacks.
Soon after the Boston bombings, the FBI accused an Elvis impersonator of sending letters containing ricin to Obama and other officials, only to quickly drop the charges for a lack of evidence.
Mueller and his leadership team have briefed members of Congress about the cases, but further inquiries are likely.
"I think he is ready to go home. He has had 12 years," said Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. He praised Mueller, who was first nominated to the job by a Republican president, George W. Bush.
"He has had some major issues to confront, including 9/11, then Russian and China threats, cyber threats," he said.
Some lawmakers say that despite the Boston blasts, the FBI thwarted other plots in recent years, including one to bomb New York's subway system. They also note that there was an arrest within days of the Boston bombing.
"I thought they (the FBI) did fabulous in getting to the bottom of the Boston bombing, but as great as that was, it was embarrassing to bring in a guy who had nothing to do with the ricin mailings," said Representative Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican who serves on the Judiciary Committee, which has oversight of the FBI.
Mueller's office did not comment, although Mueller has praised the work of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies for the arrest of the Boston bombing suspect.
LOW PROFILE?
Some think Mueller's secret to success has been keeping a low profile in a town where many people are constantly angling to get attention. Mueller, while doing a lot of closed-door briefings for leaders, does not talk much to the media.
"I think he has been successful because he hasn't been a press hog," Grassley said.
Mueller, a former Justice Department official, was nominated for the top FBI job in 2001 and took office days before the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
When Obama asked Mueller to stay on, some Senate Republicans initially balked. One, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, came around after Mueller met with him to discuss the bureau's handling of a Kentucky case.
Mueller fielded heavy criticism from his earliest days in office.
After the 9/11 attacks, politicians from both parties questioned how the FBI had missed several warning signs of the hijackings, such as a memo from a Phoenix agent about Middle Eastern men taking flight lessons.
The anthrax case led to criticism because the bureau focused for so long on the wrong man, a mistake that ultimately cost the government millions of dollars in settling a lawsuit.
The FBI finally concluded that Army scientist Bruce Ivans was responsible for the anthrax attacks, but he killed himself before charges were brought.
In 2008, Leahy, then the Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee, told Mueller he did not believe the FBI finding that Ivans was solely responsible. Leahy said he thought others had to be involved.
Mueller reorganized the FBI to expand its analytical capability and improve its intelligence collection. He also beefed up its bioterrorism capabilities.
He has been praised for resisting some parts of the expansion of domestic surveillance under Bush.
Grassley said Mueller had not always been as responsive as possible to the senator's letters or "as protective of whistleblowers as he should be."
But he said there should not be another extension as director for Mueller, no matter how well liked he may be.
The purpose of the law limiting the director's term "is to make sure we don't get into this J. Edgar Hoover syndrome, that one guy is so indispensable," Grassley said, referring to the former FBI director of almost four decades. "We don't want to get caught in that syndrome again."

Veteran gardening personality Eion Scarrow has died at the age of 81.
His family said he died "peacefully in his bed" in a rest home on Anzac Day with Ann, his wife of 21 years, at his side.
Scarrow had a passion for gardening, and was probably best known as the host of gardening show Dig This, from 1972-1986.
He also presented gardening programmes on radio for 30 years, wrote columns for several publications and took garden tours to 90 countries as well as writing a total of 24 books.
Although in recent years Scarrow had suffered a number of health issues including prostate cancer and had several heart surgeries, Ann Scarrow said he never lost his love for plants.
"Even when I would visit him in the rest home, he would still be asking how the garden was looking, and asking me how I was managing it.
"He'd say 'oh no, you have to do it this way,'" she said.
"He just loved gardening, and I think he enjoyed getting everybody into gardening."
She said he was gardening and propagating (creating new plants) right up until he went into Aparangi Rest Home in January this year.
A family friend, who did not wish to be named, said he would always enjoy helping people who sought out his gardening advice at their local market.
"He was a very friendly chap, and he had a huge heart. He loved teaching children about gardening as well."
Ann said the family "dearly missed him", but he had been in pain so his death was also a blessing.
Scarrow leaves behind Ann, four adult children and three adult step-children, 13 grandchildren and one great grandson.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday.

Hostel Detroit Program Pairs Visitors With 'Ambassadors' To Experience City

DETROIT, April 26 (Reuters) - Detroit is not exactly among America's top 10 tourist destinations. But a local nonprofit hopes to alter public perceptions of one of the nation's poorest big cities, where more than a quarter of its residents live below the poverty line.
Hostel Detroit, which marks its second anniversary in April, is offering out-of-towners to the Motor City an "ambassador" experience that pairs volunteers with visitors on free cultural tours of local art, architecture and music.
The effort is attracting a growing number of takers at the same time the state is promoting itself with programs such as Pure Michigan. Tourism officials last Monday said 2012 brought in 3.8 million out-of-state visitors - one of the highest numbers in years - and a record $1.1 billion in spending.
Some of those visitors are joining groups led by volunteers like Kevin Ward, an Ann Arbor native who's lived in Detroit for two years and who tackles the subject of Detroit's decline head-on.
"So I'm guessing you guys have maybe heard bad things about Detroit," Ward told a gathering of about 15 twentysomethings scattered across the muddy, damp ground of Lincoln Street Art Park on a recent tour. As the group took note of such urban amenities as a pheasant mural on the side of a brick building and a massive dinosaur made entirely of scavenged materials, Ward, 29, noted that Detroit had its problems of poverty, racial tension and population loss.
It's like a tale of two cities, he said. "You have the city government, which is having a lot of problems. But you also have a ton of people coming in to open businesses that are taking advantage of all the things that the city has to offer."
Ward works for an Ann Arbor software company and lives in Midtown, Detroit's cultural district centered around Wayne State University not far from downtown. He is one of several volunteers for the hostel, which opened in April 2011 in Corktown, one of Detroit's oldest neighborhoods that has seen a recent surge of development from young entrepreneurs.
Hostel Detroit was envisioned as a way to connect out-of-town visitors with local residents. It is "an educational organization that is meant to show people Detroit's culture and assets and the real story of what's happening here," said founder Emily Doerr, who serves on the hostel's board of directors. Support comes from guests who stay in the hostel's nine bedrooms as well as the Knight and June and Cecil Mcdole Foundations. Volunteers contribute time, material or services to help make the hostel run.
City tourism officials welcome the program as an added attraction to appeal to visitors from a wider range of ages and economic backgrounds. "The community is coming together, attempting to attract a younger generation to downtown Detroit," said Michael O'Callaghan, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.
To date the hostel has hosted about 1,600 people from 23 countries. While organizers said the hostel has provided accommodations for people of all ages and backgrounds, the most typical visitors are in their 20s or 30s with "an adventurous spirit."
Anastasia Farnum, 20, stayed at the hostel during spring break to visit art colleges. Though the Orlando, Florida, resident had been warned that Detroit was "dangerous," she wanted to check out the city anyway and said she loved her experience at the hostel.
"I really like that there's a community," she said. "With a hotel, you check in and you check out, and it's really cold. But I like the idea that people can give you advice on the area and you can talk to other people who are also visiting."
In addition to the street art tour, the program showcases urban farming and city neighborhoods, and offers customized programs tailored to specific tastes. The hostel also refers guests to paid city tours.
Beyond such local landmarks as the Detroit Institute of Arts and Motown Museum, Ward said ambassadors tip visitors to attractions such as the Contemporary Art Museum, the original Ford Model T plant on Piquette Avenue, street art murals and underground jazz. Not surprisingly, the tours focus on positive sights, although signs of urban decay are hard to miss.
The ambassador program also tries to connect outsiders with locals on a less formal level, promoting networking opportunities where possible.
Ontario native Deveri "Dee" Gifford, 31, said her experience with Hostel Detroit enabled her to open her restaurant, the Brooklyn Street Local, in Detroit last May. She and her husband had been scouting potential spaces when they took part in an potluck mixer. A local volunteer connected them to a real estate agent, who in turn directed them to a suitable space in Corktown.
"When we moved here, within about a week I felt that we had a really solid support network, and that was incredibly surprising to me that it just happened that fast," said Gifford.
John Donahue, from Charlotte, Michigan, said the hostel was instrumental in getting him involved in Detroit.
The 58-year-old cyclist said he used to drive the 200 miles to Chicago for bike tours because he had grown up with the notion that Detroit was a "scary place."
It wasn't until his friend recommended Detroit, twice as close, that Donahue fell in love with the city. He's since become one of the hostel's most frequent visitors, sometimes staying up to three times a month to take part in city activities.
As it celebrates its second anniversary, Hostel Detroit has just hired its first full-time manager to better organize and expand the ambassador program, Doerr said. The hostel is also considering either adding on to its current building in Corktown or looking for a larger space altogether.
Whatever the changes, the goal remains the same.

Hospital roof collapses in India, injuring 8
NEW DELHI (AP) ? Part of a hospital building collapsed in central India on Friday after its roof came crashing down, injuring at least eight people, an official said.
More than a dozen people were rescued after being trapped in the rubble of the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh state, state minister Babu Lal Gaur said. None of the injuries were serious.
Police officer Upendra Jain said about two dozen people were believed to be on the first floor of the women's medical ward when its roof crashed down. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.
The Press Trust of India news agency quoted local administrator Nikunj Shrivastava as saying that two people were killed in the building collapse. Shrivastava could not be immediately reached for comment.
The hospital is operated by state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Gaur said. Bhopal is about 750 kilometers (465 miles) south of New Delhi.
Building collapses are common in India as builders try to cut corners by using substandard materials, and as multistory structures are built with inadequate supervision. The massive demand for housing around cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorized floors or constructing illegal buildings.
Earlier this month, at least 72 people were killed when an eight-story residential building being constructed illegally near Mumbai, India's financial capital, came crashing down in the worst building collapse in the country in decades.
Another 70 people were injured when the building in the Mumbai suburb of Thane caved in on April 4.

"We were stunned to see the large-ranged mobility in such small objects," said Deborah Kelly, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute. "We now have a system to watch the behaviors of therapeutic nanoparticles at atomic resolution."
Nanoparticles are made of many materials and come in different shapes and sizes. In the new study, Kelly and her colleagues chose to make rod-shaped gold nanoparticles the stars of their new molecular movies. These nanoparticles, roughly the size of a virus, are used to treat various forms of cancer. Once injected, they accumulate in solid tumors. Infrared radiation is then used to heat them and destroy nearby cancerous cells.
To take an up-close look at the gold nanoparticles in action, the researchers made a vacuum-tight microfluidic chamber by pressing two silicon-nitride semiconductor chips together with a 150-nanometer spacer in between. The microchips contained transparent windows so the beam from a transmission electron microscope could pass through to create an atomic-scale image.
Using the new technique, the scientists created two types of visualizations. The first included pictures of individual nanoparticles' atomic structures at 100,000-times magnification -- the highest resolution images ever taken of nanoparticles in a liquid environment.
The second visualization was a movie captured at 23,000-times magnification that revealed the movements of a group of nanoparticles reacting to an electron beam, which mimics the effects of the infrared radiation used in cancer therapies.
In the movie, the gold nanoparticles can be seen surfing nanoscale tidal waves.
"The nanoparticles behaved like grains of sand being concentrated on a beach by crashing waves," said Kelly. "We think this behavior may be related to why the nanoparticles become concentrated in tumors. Our next experiment will be to insert a cancer cell to study the nanoparticles' therapeutic effects on tumors."
The team is also testing the resolution of the microfluidic system with other reagents and materials, bringing researchers one step closer to viewing live biological mechanisms in action at the highest levels of resolution possible.

Possible 9/11 plane landing gear part found in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) ? A rusted 5-foot-tall piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the hijacked planes destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks has been discovered near the World Trade Center wedged between a luxury apartment building and a mosque site that once prompted virulent national debate about Islam and free speech.
The twisted metal part, jammed in an 18-inch-wide sliver of open space between the buildings, has cables and levers on it and is about 17 inches wide and 4 feet long, New York Police Department Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday.
"It's a manifestation of a horrific terrorist act a block and a half away from where we stand," he said. "So, sure, it brings back terrible memories to anyone who was here or who was involved in that event."
Kelly edged down the narrow passageway to look at the object Friday evening, noting there is also a piece of rope intertwined with the part in what looks like a broken pulley that may have come down from the roof of the site of the planned Islamic community center, at 51 Park Place.
The piece of equipment was discovered Wednesday by surveyors inspecting the lower Manhattan site of a planned Islamic community center on behalf of the building's owner, police said.
An inspector was on the roof and noticed the debris and then called 911. Police secured the scene, documenting it with photos.
It includes a clearly visible Boeing Co. identification number, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.
"The odds of this being wedged between there is amazing," Browne said, adding it was not surprising that it went undiscovered for more than a decade given the location. "It had to have fallen just the right way to make it into that space."
Other World Trade Center wreckage had been discovered at the buildings and around the area in years past.
Police detectives and National Transportation Safety Board investigators will determine whether the equipment is from the American Airlines plane or the United Airlines plane that slammed into the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001, destroying the towers and killing nearly 3,000 people.
When plans for the Islamic center, about three blocks from ground zero, were made public in 2010, opponents said they didn't want a mosque so close to where Islamic extremists attacked. They argued the site was "sacred" because landing gear from one of the hijacked Boeing 767 jets had punctured the roof of the building on Sept. 11.
During street protests, they clashed with supporters of the center, who said it would promote harmony between Muslims and followers of other faiths.
The building includes a Muslim prayer space that has been open for three years. After protests died down, the center hosted its first exhibit last year. The space remains under renovation.
Donna Marsh O'Connor, who lost her daughter Vanessa Lang Langer in the attacks and is a member of September 11th Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow, called the landing gear discovery "bizarre."
O'Connor is a supporter of the Islamic center and said the fact that the plane fragment was found there "makes me think that this was the right place for a center that was going to heal the divide."
In a statement, Sharif El-Gamal, the president of Soho Properties, which owns 51 Park Place, said workers called the city and the police as soon as they discovered the landing gear. He said the company is cooperating with the city and the police to make sure the piece of equipment "is removed with care as quickly and effectively as possible."
The medical examiner's office will complete a health and safety evaluation to determine whether to sift the soil around the buildings for possible human remains, police said.
Patricia Riley, whose sister Lorraine Riley was killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, called the landing gear discovery "very strange."
"Twelve years later we are still finding remnants of the attack on our country," she said. "... For years to come we'll continue to find things that we didn't see before. Hopefully, they'll serve as a reminder that we have to stay vigilant."
Outside the Islamic center building, known as Park51, a police officer stood next to the door on Friday and a police barricade was set up to contain the many journalists who had gathered to try to see the piece of the plane.
The landing gear could not be seen from the sidewalk so commuters rushed by and looked quizzically at the gathering.
Among the bystanders was one immersed in the legacy of the attacks: Van Vanable, heading home from his job as an ironworker building the new 1 World Trade Center.
"Amazing," he said of the find. "There's still pieces to the puzzle."
The Park51 space, a former Burlington Coat factory, is a five-story, mildly run-down building. Renovations are expected to take years and would add an auditorium, a pool, a restaurant and culinary school, a child care facility and artist studios.
The piece of plane is wedged in an alley space between that building and 50 Murray St., a luxury loft rental building.

At least 19 Iraqis killed in police clashes with militants
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least 10 Iraqi policemen and nine Sunni Islamist militants were killed in clashes on Thursday in the northern city of Mosul, the third day of the fiercest fighting since U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011, military sources said.
Gunmen launched an attack in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, on Wednesday night and seized western parts of the city after using a mosque loudspeaker to rally Sunnis to join the battle.
Military sources said federal police and the army had regained control over most of the area on Thursday but were still surrounding a police headquarters seized by militants, who were holding five hostages.
The violence, which broke out after Iraqi troops stormed a Sunni Muslim protest camp on Tuesday, deepens sectarian rifts in Iraq. More than 30 people were killed in gun battles between security forces and militants on Wednesday.
The clashes were the bloodiest since thousands of Sunni Muslims started protests in December to demand an end to what they see as marginalization of their sect by Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki following the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni.
Dozens of people have been killed in bomb attacks across the country in sectarian violence this year.

"The English Teacher" follows footsteps of "Weeds," "Nurse Jackie"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fans of "Nurse Jackie," "Weeds," and "The Big C" will recognize the quirky lead of "The English Teacher" as she steps out of her straight-laced life to encounter unexpected consequences, the movie's director said in an interview.
In "The English Teacher," which has its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, lead character Linda Sinclair, played by Julianne Moore, tries to mount a high school production of a play written by a former student (Michael Angarano) who has returned to his small hometown in Pennsylvania.
With the help of Nathan Lane as the high school's drama teacher and Greg Kinnear as the playwright's father, putting on the production leads almost everyone involved into trouble.
Directing the tale is Craig Zisk, who has dozens of well-regarded television series under his belt as producer or director, including "Parks and Recreation," "The Big C," "Nip/Tuck," "Weeds" and "Scrubs."
"Most of the shows that I either produced or directed feature very strong female leads," Zisk said in an interview with Reuters, ticking off the names of Mary-Louise Parker in "Weeds," Laura Linney in "The Big C," Toni Collette in "United States of Tara" and Edie Falco in "Nurse Jackie."
"With these incredibly talented strong women, I was really attracted to that when I read the script," he said.
"They are all very flawed characters," he added. "In the case of Linda, she's actually someone trying to do the right thing ... even though every time she tries to do something nice for somebody, it backfires and blows up in her face."
"The English Teacher" is Zisk's first feature film, an undertaking he said he weighed for five years before finding the right movie to make. Zisk is a four-time primetime Emmy nominee.
"I know how important the first feature is, especially for someone coming from television, because in the past there's kind of been a knock on television directors and people getting one shot," he said.
But apart from the obvious appeal of branching out, he said that making a film rather than a television show gave him the unprecedented luxury of time to prepare and an autonomy he enjoyed.
"The producers pretty much left me on my own, which was really great," Zisk said. "I feel like I made the movie I wanted to make."
Being distributed domestically by Cinedigm Entertainment Group and Tribeca Film, "The English Teacher" opens in theaters on May 17. It also can be found on-demand on television.

The Best Experimental Chrome Features You Should Check Out
Google Chrome is an great browser as it is, but that doesn't mean it doesn't come with its share of annoyances and curiosities. You can fix some of these, as well as add new features by playing around with Chrome's experimental settings. Here are a few we really like.
When you type chrome://flags into your URL bar in Chrome, you get all kinds of crazy options for experimental features. Some of these can fix problems with Chrome, others do absolutely nothing, and others might wreck havoc on your system, so use them with caution. With that in mind, here are a few we've tested and love, although your mileage may vary.
Generate Passwords
If you're not using a password manager like LastPass (and you really should be) then you probably find yourself just reusing the same password over and over. That's no good for security, and while you're better off with a password manager, if you're holding out, you can generate new passwords right in Chrome. Just head to the Flags page, and enable, "Enable password generation." Now when you go to a new signup page, you'll see a small key icon. Click that, and Chrome will automatically make a password for you that's synced across all your versions of Chrome.
Tab Overview with a Gesture
Mac only: If you're a Mac user on a laptop you know the trials of having way too many tabs open. They line up across the top of the browser and suddenly you can't tell which tab is which. If you enable the experimental feature, "Tab Overview Mac," you can get a quick look at all the tabs you have open by holding down Option and swiping down with three fingers. It's incredibly handy.
Tab Stacking
Windows only: If you're on Windows and have a tab problem, Chrome has you covered there as well. When you enable "Tab Stacking" your tabs automatically start stacking on top of each other instead of just side-by-side when you have a ton open. As Ghacks points out, it's a feature that's been in Opera for a while. Tab stacking still needs a little work on Chrome, but it's better than nothing.
Speed Up Chrome's Performance
Whether Chrome is running slow or you simply want it to run faster, you have a few different options that can help boost performance. Enabling any of these can cause some problems with different video cards, so if you run into problems you might need to turn them off. Head into the flags page and enable these settings:
- GPU compositing on all pages: This option should speed up Chrome across the board by giving your GPU more stuff to do. We've had mixed luck with this one, so use at your own risk.
- Threaded compositing: As cool as the name sounds, you'll probably only get smoother scrolling when a page is loading with this enabled. Still, that's helpful enough for those slow-loading pages.
- GPU Accelerated SVG Filters: This might speed up graphics-heavy sites that have a lot of effects like shaders going on.
Those are the only ones that will speed up performance without significantly changing how web pages look. Other options, like "Disable accelerated 2D canvas," might speed up performance but it might have a negative effect on how pages are displayed.
Make Browsing On Touch Screen Devices Bearable
Chrome's not made for touch screen devices, and that means that browsing on something like a Microsoft Surface is next to impossible. Thankfully, our own Melanie Pinola tested out a few of the experimental features and recommends enabling the following flags: "Touch Optimized UI," "Enable Touch Events," and "Enable Touch Initiated Drag and Drop." Combined, those should make it possible to use Chrome on your Windows touch device without giving you a headache.
Keep an Eye On What Your Extensions Are Doing
Chrome extensions want access to all kinds of data, and if you're uncomfortable with that you might want to peek under the hood and see what they're doing. When you turn on "Enable extension activity UI" a new option is added to the Extensions tab in your Settings. When you click "Activity," Chrome starts logging what the extension is doing so you can get a look at it and make sure it's not doing anything you don't want. It's a little hard to read, but you can at least decipher a little bit of what it's up to.
Fix Annoyances
The other thing that Chrome's Flags do is fix common annoyances. Occasionally, Chrome adds a new feature that makes things work differently, or that starts shooting out annoying notifications. The first place to check is the flags to see if you can disable it, but here are a few that fix common annoyances:
- Revert to the Old New Tab Page: Just find "Enable Instant Extended API" and set it to "disabled." This should bring back the old new tab with history and recently closed at the forefront.
- Turn Off Chrome Notification in Windows: If the way Chrome's notification icon sticks around after you close it is annoying you then turning it off is pretty simple. Just find "Enable Rich Notifications" and set it to disabled. That should keep the notifications from popping up when you're not actually running Chrome.
- Smooth Scrolling: If you're not getting smooth scrolling on Windows or Linux, turning this feature on should get smooth scrolling working properly.
These are just a few we've tested and enjoyed. For the most part, you can fiddle around with the Chrome flags to your hearts content. Just make a note of what you're enabling (or disabling) so you can fix it in the future. Not every setting is going to work for everyone, and a few that sounded great, like "Enable desktop guest mode" and "Full History Sync" didn't work for us at all, but you might be able to get them running.

Getty ImagesLarry Felser, a longtime pro football reporter and columnist for the Buffalo News, passed away?on Wednesday at age 80, the publication reported.
Felser covered the Bills from 1960, when they were one of the charter members of the American Football League, through 2001, the News said. He also was sports editor of the News.
In a statement issued by the Bills, owner Ralph Wilson Jr. praised Felser?s work.
?Larry was there at the beginning of the American Football League and along with fellow reporters such as Will McDonough and others, played an important role in the growth of our league,? Wilson said. ?He was the consummate professional ? tough, but fair, and never one to shy away from clearly stating his opinion.
?I had tremendous respect for Larry and we developed a deep friendship that lasted throughout our lifetimes. We shared some great laughs over the years and that?s what I am remembering most today about Larry. I will truly miss him. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his lovely wife, Beverly, and their family.?
In 1984, Felser earned the Dick McCann Award, an honor voted upon by the Pro Football Writers of America and awarded by the Pro Football Hall of Fame for?meritorious reporting on the sport.
For those wishing to read an example of Felser?s work, the Buffalo News recently republished a column he wrote after the Bills? remarkable comeback against the Oilers in January 1993.
