In the genes, but which ones? Studies that linked specific genes to intelligence were largely wrong, experts say

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? For decades, scientists have understood that there is a genetic component to intelligence, but a new Harvard study has found both that most of the genes thought to be linked to the trait are probably not in fact related to it, and identifying intelligence's specific genetic roots may still be a long way off.

Led by David I. Laibson '88, the Robert I. Goldman Professor of Economics, and Christopher F. Chabris '88, Ph.D. '99, assistant professor of psychology at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., a team of researchers examined a dozen genes using large data sets that included both intelligence testing and genetic data. As reported in a forthcoming article in the journal Psychological Science, they found that in nearly every case, the hypothesized genetic pathway failed to replicate. In other words, intelligence could not be linked to the specific genes that were tested.

"It is only in the past 10 or 15 years that we have had the technology for people to do studies that involved picking a particular genetic variant and investigating whether people who score higher on intelligence tests tend to have that genetic variant," said Chabris. "In all of our tests we only found one gene that appeared to be associated with intelligence, and it was a very small effect. This does not mean intelligence does not have a genetic component, it means it's a lot harder to find the particular genes, or the particular genetic variants, that influence the differences in intelligence."

To get at the question of how genes influence intelligence, researchers first needed data, and plenty of it.

Though it had long been understood, based on studies of twins, that intelligence was a heritable trait, it wasn't until relatively recently that the technology emerged to allow scientists to directly probe DNA in a search for genes that affected intelligence.

The problem, Chabris said, was that early technology for assaying genes was very expensive, meaning that such studies were typically limited to, at most, several hundred subjects, who would take IQ tests and provide DNA samples for testing.

As part of their study, Chabris and his colleagues relied on several pre-existing data sets -- a massive study of Wisconsin high school graduates that began in the 1950s, the Framingham Heart Study, and an ongoing survey of all twins born in Sweden -- to expand that subject pool from a few hundred to many thousands.

"What we want to emphasize is that we are not saying the people who did earlier research in this area were foolish or wrong," Chabris said. "They were using the best technology they had available. At the time it was believed that individual genes would have a much larger effect -- they were expecting to find genes that might each account for several IQ points."

To identify genes that might play a role in intelligence, previous researchers used the "candidate gene approach," which requires identifying a gene that is already linked with a known biological function -- such as Alzheimer's disease or the production of a specific neurotransmitter. If people who scored high on intelligence tests shared a particular variant of that gene, it was believed, that demonstrated the gene's role in intelligence.

"These were reasonable hypotheses," said study co-author Daniel J. Benjamin '99, Ph.D. '06, assistant professor of economics at Cornell University. "But in retrospect, either the findings were false positives or the effects of the genes are much, much smaller than anyone had anticipated."

Chabris, however, emphasized that the results don't point to the idea that the dozen genes examined in the study play no role in intelligence, but rather suggest that intelligence may be tied to many genes and the ways in which they interact.

"As is the case with other traits, like height, there are probably thousands of genes and their variants that are associated with intelligence," he said. "And there may be other genetic effects beyond the single gene effects -- there could be interactions between genes, there could be interactions between genes and the environment. What our results show is that the way researchers have been looking for genes that may be related to intelligence -- the candidate gene method -- is fairly likely to result in false positives, so other methods should be used."

The Weight Loss Industry Is Not Your Friend at Apeco Health and ...

Do you think the diet industry really wants you to lose weight? Think again!

We see these commercials for diet products, personal trainers, exercise equipment and gym chains. They look so nice don?t they? Get ripped in just five minutes a day they say. Eat the same foods you love and lose weight anyway. Come here for just $10 a month with no signup fee? wow sounds like these companies really care about us, they want us to slim down and want us to get in to the best shape of our lives.

NONSENSE!

The weight loss and diet business is a billion upon billion dollar industry and they care about one thing? selling you their products.

Weight Loss Products

How many weight loss products are out there that you can name off the top of your head? Atkins bars, Medifast, Weight Watchers frozen dinners, Nutrisystem, heck even Diet Pepsi. All designed to help you think they will help you lose weight. Sure you might lose weight for a little while on Medifast or the like, but do you want to eat freeze dried oatmeal the rest of your life?

Of course not, and the marketers behind all this stuff know you don?t. Their goal is to get you to buy it, have a little bit of success and quit. Then you?ll come crawling back for more like the diet junkie you are.

Made for TV Exercise Equipment

Im not going to say all exercise equipment is bad because quite frankly if you want to lose weight you need to get your butt on the treadmill, but you can?t go through five channels on TV without seeing a brand new ?ab ripper machine? or ?compact cardio blaster that folds up and fits under the bed?. Do you really think these things work? Do you think Chuck Norris got ripped because he uses the Total Gym for 10 minutes a day three times a week? Really?

You?ll do what everyone else does and hit your dieting low point and whip out the credit card thinking ?this time for real? and when the box finally gets to your house it?ll sit in your basement for six months until you open it up. Then you?ll try it for a few times, not see 6 pack abs in 30 seconds and give up, only to go and buy the next ?Fat Blaster X9000? that comes in three easy payments of $59.95.

Your Local Gym Chain

You need to go to your gym. Let me repeat. Get off your butt and go to the gym, work hard and you will lose weight.

So why are gym chains in the list of weight loss businesses that don?t care about you? Because they want you to come to the gym, sign up once (on a monthly rebilling membership) and never come back.

$10 a month sounds awesome right? Guess what? That?s just low enough for you to forget you have it, or not break your back to go cancel it. So every month you pay and more and more of you go in to the gym and sign up while they sit back and collect the checks.

Think about it if everyone who had a gym membership all went at the same time do you think there would be less than a 3 hour wait on every treadmill? Yea, plus the insurance companies that provide coverage to the gym in case someone blows out their pecks trying to bench 600 pounds don?t want that many people either. So next time you go sign up for a gym membership actually use it k?

Restaurant Owners Can't Ignore Safety and Security Issues, Says ...

So you?ve got a new restaurant ? are you prepared for a safety or security crisis? Preparing for a crisis involves a lot more than getting a good liability insurance policy.

Restaurant Expert Witness, Restaurant Consultant, and CEO, Howard Cannon believes that the restaurant industry needs to pay closer attention to safety and security, stating, ?Government agencies recommend monthly safety meetings with staff and management, but very few follow that advice. Too often, there is poor training and lack of focus on safety and security for customers or the restaurant staff; and, there is little or no commitment to following up on the training that does exist.?

Cannon says, ?In any industry, there are going to be events that may not be avoided. However, to reduce risks, restaurant management and employees should be trained in security and safety measures. Training typically revolves around security discussions, review of policies and procedures that have been put in place to minimize risk, and a combination of follow-up and monitoring to ensure compliance. He adds, ?Having cameras in good locations, appropriate locks, and a well-lit facility can reduce the likelihood of problems.?

Mr. Cannon believes that those in the restaurant industry need to focus on managing their risks whenever possible, stating, ??What-if? situations are supposed to be thought out ahead of time. Having a ready response for virtually every conceivable situation helps enormously . . . What if your staff didn?t lock the back door after dark? What if only one employee closed out the restaurant and left at 11 pm with the bank deposit? . . . You can easily become ?sitting ducks? ripe for accidents, or worse.?

The restaurant industry faces another profound security risk, and that is the risk from within. Mr. Cannon encourages restaurant owners to protect their assets, stating, ?It?s a shocking fact, but 44% of restaurant employees steal from the establishment and 80% of theft is from management personnel. The industry has historically been buried with alcohol and drug abuse. Getting rid of that liability will reduce the likelihood of bigger problems.? Cameras can be a good preventative measure for this problem. They also act as a deterrent to would-be embezzlers and to would-be criminals from the outside. Additionally, when there are infractions, they help establish proof for criminal investigations, prosecutions, and other legal matters. Do restaurant customers like cameras though? Cannon believes that most of them do. ?It depends on the people, but most customers will feel safer in establishments with cameras and a security system,? he says. ?If something does happen, they have the confidence that the incident will be recorded and that record will protect them. People are looking for that kind of protection these days.

Howard Cannon is a highly recognized restaurant expert witness, consultant, analyst, and speaker. He is the author of The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Starting a Restaurant? ? found in 76 countries around the globe. (AP) ? To the world, Whitney Houston was the pop queen with the perfect voice, the dazzling diva with regal beauty, a troubled superstar suffering from addiction and, finally, another victim of the dark side of fame.

To her family and friends, she was just "Nippy." A nickname given to Houston when she was a child, it stuck with her through adulthood and, later, would become the name of one of her companies. To them, she was a sister, a friend, a daughter, and a mother.

While the world remembers Houston from afar, those closest to her will gather Saturday at a private funeral to say goodbye. They come together at New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston wowed the congregation with her powerful voice even as a young girl.

The service marks exactly one week after the 48-year-old Houston ? one of music's all-time biggest stars ? was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel in California. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," is expected to sing at the service, as is Stevie Wonder and gospel star CeCe Winans. Music mogul Clive Davis, who launched and shepherded her career throughout the decades, may speak, along with Kevin Costner, her co-star in the blockbuster film "The Bodyguard."

Her ex-husband Bobby Brown also is expected to attend, along with the couple's only child, Bobbi Kristina.

Houston's death marked the final chapter for the superstar whose fall from grace while shocking was years in the making. Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records.

Over her career, she sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," ''I Will Always Love You," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.

But amid the fame, a turbulent marriage to Brown and her addiction to drugs tarnished her image. She became a woman falling apart in front of the world.

Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.

Still, a comeback was ahead: She was to star in the remake of the movie "Sparkle" and was working on new music. Her family, friends and hard-core fans were hopeful.

The funeral is for invited guests only. Houston is scheduled to be buried next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

The Associated Press will stream the funeral service on the Internet at www.livestream.com/aplive and broadcasters also will be able to air it.

The Beat | Traveling On Business? Peoplexpress Might Not Be For ...

The Peoplexpress brand is about to rise from the grave, but the carrier still may be dead to corporate travelers.

If you haven't already heard, the blast from the past plans to come back to the future this year. Its base of operations will be in Newport News, Va.; its fleet comprises fewer than a dozen Boeing 737-400 aircraft; its proposed destinations are Pittsburgh, Providence, West Palm Beach and Newark; and its mission is "to serve markets currently underserved by major carriers."

Wolfe Trahan airline analyst Hunter Keay shared a healthy dose of skepticism in a research note published Friday. "First and foremost the strategy seems very broad and runs the risk of trying to accomplish too much at once," he noted.

There's a case to be made for leisure travelers?especially those seeking to avoid bag fees and buy "deeply discounted fares," as the carrier calls them. But according to Keay, "We aren't sure how an airline with seven to ten aircraft intends on capturing business travelers when business travelers care about frequencies, network reach, frequent flier miles and upgrades." Furthermore, Peoplexpress will not offer business class, another strike in the minds of many business travelers.

To Keay, the carrier would be better to limit its focus. "Most airlines would like to offer a product that appeals to every single type of air traveler," Keay wrote, but even the most consistently profitable major U.S. carrier of the past few decades, Southwest Airlines, "sometimes struggles to retain business travelers." Remember, Southwest "operates about 100 times more aircraft than will Peoplexpress," Keay pointed out.

Meanwhile, Keay sees Peoplexpress sharing a congested East Coast stage with "growth-hungry" (not to mention largely successful) carriers like JetBlue and Spirit.

Yet, beneath all of Keay's skepticism is an underlying concern that Peoplexpress could indeed become successful and potentially upset the apple cart. The U.S. airline industry in recent years successfully has kept supply tight and fares relatively high. Start-ups?no matter how familiar in name?tend to disrupt that balance, oftentimes to the benefit of passengers, but the dismay of financial analysts. "Though Peoplexpress is still to small to affect the larger airline landscape, it is the mere effort that concerns us," according to Keay.

For the immediate future, the fledgling carrier will be tied up with quite a bit of paperwork as it seeks regulatory blessings from the Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration. It has yet to announce a CEO, though it claimed one has been chosen. Peoplexpress operated between 1981 and 1987, at one point as the fifth largest domestic carrier, before being bought by Continental Airlines.

While some things are best left in the '80s (cassette tapes, Alf, parachute pants and Milli Vanilli quickly came to my mind), other creations from that decade have endured. Apple, which launched its initial public offering in late 1980, has become one of the most successful corporations the world has ever seen, and Madonna just headlined the Super Bowl half-time show.

Time will tell if Peoplexpress is a gently used pair of parachute pants or perhaps something with a little more staying power.

Buenos Aires Food Tour ? LandingStanding

If you have been actively reading our blog, you are probably well aware by now that the way?to my heart is through?my stomach?

? And Buenos Aires has me head over heels in love.

Being the lucky girl that I am, this love affair started within the first 24 hours of arriving in this magical city. Now, I may not be a believer in love at first sight, but love at first bite is a whole different story!

On the second day of our trip, Tony and I were graciously invited to attend a day of eating and drinking our way through the city via Buenos Aires Food Tours. This seemed too good to pass up!

Before I start divulging into the gluttonous day we spent with Buenos Aires Food Tours, I will give you a little background on the company:

Buenos Aires Food Tours was started up by ethnic dining expert Graciela (whom also founded Miami Culinary Tours) roughly a year ago and provides culinary walking tours around the San Telmo, La Boca, and Recoleta neighborhoods (a.k.a. Barrios).

This unique tour group, however, is not just about food.? Aside from pigging out on all the regional delicacies, they also want their customers to gain knowledge about the local community, the history of the city, and the beautiful architecture that defines Buenos Aires.

In addition to the distinctive approach on their tours, Buenos Aires Food Tours got exceptionally good TripAdvisor reviews.? After everything that I learned and read about this company, I was dying to see them in action.

We signed up for the San Telmo Food Tour, which was right in the neighborhood we were hostelling in.? To be honest, I wasn?t sure what to expect going into the day.? I had never done a food tour before but, from what I gathered in my research, I imagined a BUNCH of walking around the city, followed by sampling small bites to eat at street vendors and markets.

As it turned out, it was so much different than what I expected? And so much better!

As I previously mentioned, I expected the day to involve a lot of walking, followed by mini samples of various street food.? Awesome? Yes.? Right up my ally? You betcha! But what about this scenario:

Our tour guide, Jorge

A full day of eating wonderful food and drinking luscious Argentinean wines at romantic local restaurants.? The day is peaceful, the ambiance is casual, and the company is superb.

In addition, there is an incredibly warm and knowledgeable local tour guide (and avid foodie) educating you on the local history and traditions as he orders more and more ?must-tries? for the table.

Now, I am not sure about you but this second scenario is my idea of a dream day.? And that is exactly what we got on our Buenos Aires Food Tours.

Our tour guide, Jorge, started the day off by walking our group through Mercado San Telmo to teach us about the notorious cuts of meat in Argentina. During our time in the Mercado, he had us interacting with quirky butchers who were enthusiastic to show us the ropes to the world of meat, where no part of the pig or cow goes uneaten!

Yup. That's brains all right.

?

The butcher playing with beef tongue!

We then moved onto our first restaurant of the day, Pasaje Solar, which is situated in a charming house from the late nineteenth century.? Our group got seated in the romantic outdoor patio area that was surrounded by flowers and exposed brick from the house.? I immediately began to feel tranquil and in my element.

Jorge ordered a bottle of Argentinean Elementos Torrontes white wine for the table and that provided just enough lubrication for us to become BFF?s with the rest of our wonderful tour group.

The tour group foodies!

There was Marv and Margie, the power couple from New York taking advantage of a 2 week vacation. Despite them being Yankees fans, we somehow managed to really enjoy their company?

Then there was Stephen and Anna, a lovely European couple passionate about travel. He was from England and she was from Italy? so of course Tony had to bombard her with his questions and love for all things Italian.

The table conversation was flowing freely (along with the wine) and just as I started thinking the day couldn?t get any better, the food started to arrive at the table. Since there were a TON of traditional dishes consumed over the course of the meal, I figure it will be easiest to break the menu down a little bit below:

Pickled eggplant: This was our first dish.? A little appetizie if you will (I love my food abbreviations). This dish was a perfect balance of sweet and vinegary and tasted refreshing (yet hearty) smothered on top of the delicious table bread.

Pickled eggplant

Pizza with black olive dough: Yes, this was a pizza by any standards ? melted cheese, tomato, etc.? But black olive dough?! This took this dish up so many notches it?s not even fair. Why haven?t we thought of this back in the states? Dear Dominos, this is your calling!

Pizza with black olive dough

Fried eggplant with tomatoes and cheese: Like the black olive pizza dough, having eggplant substitute regular pizza dough simply rocked. And it was fried.? Enough said. I think this is how I am going to make pizzas from now on.

Fried eggplant with tomatoes and cheese

Fried flank steak caprese: Okay noooow we have steak in replace of the dough.? Argentina is getting a little crazy on me! ?This was soooo darn good.

Fried flank steak caprese

Spanish Tortilla with red sausage:? From studying abroad in Spain, I have had many a fried tortilla, but for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, think of it as a thick potato and egg omelet.? Delicious.? Now take that and add succulent Argentinean red sausage.? Let?s just say that Tony was in heaven.

Spanish Tortilla with red sausage

Some additional treats ordered for the table included fried chard as well as stuffed mushrooms with parsley.? Both of these dishes were great, but the five dishes above were by far my favorites of the meal.

Fried chard

Stuffed mushrooms with parsley

When we were finished with our meal at Pasaje Solar, I thought the tour was finished for the day? And if it was, I would have left completely satisfied.

But then Jorge announced that we needed to move on to the restaurant where we would be eating LUNCH.

Como?!?!

I just had myself an Italian/Argentinean feast? Now you want me to eat more?!

But who was I to say no?

Resto del Viejo Hotel

So on we ventured to Resto del Viejo Hotel for lunch.

This restaurant was a fancy-pants restaurant that was decorated with stunning chandeliers, beautiful paintings, and an old fashioned bar.

Once again, Jorge ordered us up some fabulous wine for the table to start the meal off right.

I had a glass (okay, maybe two) of the Wayna 2007 Malbec, which I was obsessed with and Tony enjoyed a glass of the Altavista 2010 Torrontes.

Now we aren?t big white wine drinkers back home, but Argentina knows how to whip up some delicious white concoctions.

This wine was exquisite!

For lunch we gorged on veal milanese with homemade potato chips and grilled pork loin.? It is pretty clear at this point how Argentina got such a great reputation for its meat.

Veal milanese with homemade potato chips

Grilled pork loin

For dessert, Jorge had the waitor bring us out sweet potato jelly with cheese cubes.? The dish came out, and I gotta say, it did NOT look appetizing.? However, I am a big believer that you should always try a dish once before turning your nose up to it.

Sweet potato jelly with cheese cubes

Luckily, it turned out to be pretty good.

Now, if I was given the option between ordering this again or ordering a big chocolate brownie sundae, I would without a doubt order the sundae! ?But I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like the jellied sweet potato.

The meal finished up and the day was winding down.? At this point, I am mildly buzzed, ridiculously full, and loving life? And Jorge. I was also about 10 minutes away from curling up in a dark alley to take a nap.

Jorge must have seen the dopiness in the groups? eyes? and he combated it in the most perfect way?

Coffee time!

For the last part of the tour, Jorge marched us into Bar Plaza Dorrego, which is the oldest bar in Buenos Aires (established in 1881) for some espresso. This wooden paneled bar has maintained its old school charm with pictures of celebrities (who used to stop by) hanging on its walls and names carved into the wooden chairs and benches.

Bar Plaza Dorrego

The draft beer and coffee also comes with a side of roasted peanuts and its completely kosher to throw your leftover shells on the floor, adding to its rustic flare.? It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tony and I had an outstanding time on our Buenos Aires Food Tour.? It was a relaxing (and gluttonous!) day filled with great food, great wine, and great people.? Jorge was an amazing tour guide and his enthusiasm about Argentinean cuisine was contagious.? The day turned out to be completely different than what I had imagined, and I was grateful for that.

If you have a chance to travel to Buenos Aires, book a food tour immediately!? You will not be disappointed.? It?s such a great way to see the city and learn more about the culture of Buenos Aires ? Plus who can pass up the opportunity to eat and drink ALL DAY LONG?

I sure can?t!

Disclosure: Tony and I were sponsored guests of Buenos Aires Food Tours and thus did not pay for?our tour.?As always, our opinions are our own and unbiased. If we hate it? you will know.

France discusses new Syria U.N. resolution with Russia (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France said on Wednesday it was discussing a new U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria with Russia and wanted the council to consider creating "humanitarian corridors" in the country.

"We are renegotiating a resolution at the U.N. Security Council to persuade the Russians," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told France Info radio.

Russia joined China on February 4 in a double veto of a Council resolution supporting an Arab League call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to quit, provoking strong criticism from the Western and Arab states pushing for the draft.

Since then, violence has intensified with Syrian forces assaulting rebellious cities. On Wednesday troops backed by armored personnel carriers stormed a Damascus suburb.

At the United Nations, the General Assembly is due to vote on Thursday on a draft resolution that backs the Arab League plan and calls for the appointment of a joint U.N.-League envoy on Syria. There are no vetoes in General Assembly votes and its decisions are not legally binding.

Juppe, who is set to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Vienna the same day, said the vote would be symbolic and would add to pressure on the Damascus government, whose 11-month-old crackdown he described as a crime against humanity.

Paris said on Tuesday it had created an emergency fund for aid agencies looking to help the Syrian people and would propose a similar one at an international level when a "Friends of Syria" contact group meets in Tunisia next week.

"The idea of humanitarian corridors that I previously proposed to allow NGOs to reach the zones where there are scandalous massacres should be discussed at the Security Council," Juppe said.

Juppe in November suggested creating humanitarian corridors with Syrian approval or with an international mandate for shipping food and medicine to alleviate civilian suffering.

Under that plan, the corridors would link Syrian population centers to the frontiers of Turkey and Lebanon, to the Mediterranean coast or to an airport.

Juppe has said the idea fell short of military intervention and that if Damascus did not support it, Paris would seek a Security Council mandate.

The Arab League on Sunday threw its support behind Syria's opposition and called for a joint U.N.-Arab peacekeeping force to quell the violence.

Juppe did not say whether armed opposition groups operating loosely under the label of the Syrian Free Army should be given weapons as some Arab officials have suggested, saying the risk of civil war was "extremely high."

"What we want is to end the violence not encourage it," Juppe said.

Sarkozy declares he's seeking second term

By The Associated Press

PARIS -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy will seek a second term in upcoming elections despite years of low popularity ratings, pledging Wednesday to boost its lagging economy and protect the country's way of life.

"Yes, I am a candidate for the presidential elections," Sarkozy said on national TV network TF1 on Wednesday night.

For months, polls have shown Sarkozy well behind front-runner Francois Hollande, the longtime head of France's Socialist Party.

Pollsters say the president will face an uphill battle to convince disillusioned voters that they should elect him again. He has only two months to change minds: The first round of the two-round vote is April 22.

Sarkozy had been widely expected to announce his candidacy, but had kept his intentions quiet as other candidates have been openly campaigning for months.

In his announcement Wednesday, Sarkozy blamed French voters' troubles in part on three years of financial crisis and said he would focus on getting more people working. He promised a referendum on jobless benefits and training the unemployed, and said further reforms are needed to maintain France's "way of life."

He said France cannot turn in on itself and "pretend the crisis doesn't exist."

France's two-round presidential ballot in April and May is likely to have an impact throughout the European Union. Sarkozy has been closely involved in the fight to save the euro amid a sovereign debt crisis in the bloc.

Pollsters suggest that Sarkozy's political problems are as much of his own making as France's economic woes. Critics say Sarkozy failed to deliver on promises to improve purchasing power, hiked his own salary, and infused the gilded presidential palace with "bling" that was ill-suited for France's cultural self-image.

Earlier Wednesday, Sarkozy launched a personal Twitter account and, uncharacteristically humble, thanked all those "who will kindly follow me." Tens of thousands of followers joined within hours.

Gleeks Show Their Love For Whitney Houston

whit2.jpg
Glee is dedicating their Valentine?s Day episode to Whitney Houston tomorrow night, according to E! Online. Although the show was shot before the singer?s death, the producers felt it appropriate because the episode features Mercedes (played by Amber Riley) singing Whitney?s iconic hit, ?I Will Always Love You.?

Coincidentally, Amber met Whitney for the first time on Thursday night, the same night the troubled singer seemed like she was on a bender at an LA nightclub. ?I didn?t need her to take a picture with me. I didn?t need an autograph,? she says. ?The fact that she even acknowledged that I was standing there was enough for me.?

On another tragic note, Whitney?s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 18, was hospitalized for anxiety attacks twice in 12 hours following the shock of her mother?s untimely death. Her father, Bobby Brown, 43, skipped a New Edition reunion concert in Nashville to be by his ailing daughter?s side. ?Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her. However, we will get through this tragedy as a family,? Bobby tells Extra.

Groupon stock plunges on growth worries

(AP) ? Groupon had a lot to prove with its first earnings report as a public company. The nearly 14 percent slide in its stock Thursday suggests investors were not impressed.

The online deals site on Wednesday reported sharply higher fourth-quarter revenue that surpassed Wall Street's expectations. But some analysts worry about the trajectory suggested by its revenue forecast of $510 million to $550 million for the current quarter.

The guidance means Groupon Inc. expects revenue to grow by about 5 percent in the first three months of this year, compared with the last three months of 2011. By that same measure, revenue grew by a double-digit percentage in each quarter of 2011. That suggests growth is slowing down, said Collins Stewart analyst Mayuresh Masurekar.

Groupon's growth from signing up more subscribers and adding to its list of merchants is slowing, Masurekar said in a note to investors.

Chicago-based Groupon is expanding abroad, sending subscribers coupons personalized to their tastes and offering new types of deals, but growth from those initiatives may not be enough to counteract its slowing daily-deals business, Masurekar said.

Groupon makes money by sending its 33 million subscribers discounted deals on restaurant meals, manicures, gifts and a broad range of other offerings and taking a cut from what merchants take home.

The company posted an adjusted fourth-quarter loss of 2 cents per share, in large part because of unusually high international taxes. Analysts were expecting a profit of 3 cents per share

Its revenue grew 18 percent from the third quarter to the fourth, to $506.5 million. It was helped by strong holiday demand and special deals the company offered as part of its Grouponicus promotion, dubbed as Groupon's "wintertime celebration." Revenue increased 10 percent from the second quarter to the third and 33 percent from the first quarter to the second.

Still, Masurekar, along with other analysts, said Groupon's latest results were solid. Analysts don't suggest selling the stock, just waiting to see whether the company can show it can keep growing fast.

Morgan Stanley's Scott Devitt kept his rating on the stock as "Equal-weight," which means the analyst thinks the stock will trade in line with other industry stocks he covers.

Groupon, he said kept its competitive position, grew revenue while reducing marketing costs and showed no signs of "customer deal fatigue." Morgan Stanley was the main underwriter of Groupon's IPO.

Concerns about the sustainability of its easy-to-copy business model have dogged Groupon since before its November PO. Though its early growth was meteoric, rivals quickly popped up. And it drew scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission for the way it accounted for revenue in an early filing. The company restated its numbers to count as revenue only what it takes home, not the full amount that people pay for its deals.

Groupon has also been spending heavily on marketing to gain new subscribers and on hiring new workers at a frantic pace. It had about 10,000 employees as of last fall.

After pricing its IPO at $20, Groupon's stock has fluctuated between $14.85 and $31.14. On Thursday the stock fell $3.41 to close at $21.17.
