A Separation

A Separation isn?t worth watching only as a precise sociological analysis or a political critique of contemporary Iran?those qualities would be cold comfort indeed if they didn?t exist in the context of a sad, funny, suspenseful story about love, grief, and the search for justice. The ensemble cast?especially Maadi as the harried, short-tempered, ethically conflicted Nader?is extraordinary. As has become a tradition in Iranian cinema, the child characters are not just props but essential participants in the story, and both young actresses?Sarina Farhadi, the director?s daughter, as the wise-beyond-her-years Termeh and Kimia Hosseini as the caretaker?s observant, saucer-eyed little girl?deliver impeccable naturalistic performances.

Myanmar sets parliamentary by-election for April 1

(AP) ? Myanmar set parliamentary by-elections for April 1, scheduling a highly anticipated vote that will return pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's party to mainstream politics after two decades.

Before state media reported the date late Friday, Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy had said they planned to run in every seat in the by-election.

Her party boycotted last year's general elections because of restrictive rules that among other things prevented Suu Kyi from being a candidate. The government has since lifted many of those restrictions.

Most of the 48 Parliament seats being contested were vacated by MPs who became Cabinet ministers after the first parliamentary session in January.

The military is guaranteed 110 seats in the 440-seat lower house, and 56 seats in the 224-seat upper house, and the pro-military party now occupies 80 percent of the remaining 498 elected seats, so the 48 seats up for grabs, even if the NLD wins them all, will not change the balance of power.

The official announcement said political parties that will contest in the by-election must submit their candidate list by Jan. 31.

The NLD reregistered as a political party on Dec. 23.

Allowing Suu Kyi's party back into the political fold will likely give the government greater legitimacy at home and abroad.

The by-elections will also be a test of the popularity of the NLD, and Suu Kyi has cautioned that "the road ahead is full of difficulties and the road to democracy is endless."

The NLD won an overwhelming majority in elections in May 1990, but the results were ignored by the military government in power at that time.

Last year's elections were the first since 1990, but Suu Kyi was under house arrest and disqualified as a candidate.

Two Women, One Pregnant, Throw Down at Occupy Nashville Protest

On Christmas, two protesters at an Occupy Nashville encampment proved that while they may decry the way the 1% bludgeons us commoners in a manner of speaking, they still reserve the right to literally pummel one another.

The two women - one of them three months pregnant - exchanged harsh words, which quickly led to hair pulling, punching, and both of them landing on the ground.

Watch the disturbing exchange below:

British training 'Xbox generation' soldiers with tweaked games

Austerity means the military can't afford the big-budget training exercises to battle-harden new recruits, so it's relying more on computer simulations. Sadly, Virtual Battlespace 2 can't compete with the Hollywood-style excitement of Modern Warfare. That's why it's buying in game engines from the studios (VB2 was based on tech licensed from the makers of Operation Flashpoint) and cutting out the unrealistic physics -- such as rifle bullets flying three miles and vehicles that don't obey gravity. It's hoped the project will keep the attention of death-match hardened trainees and encourage them to play it in their own time: the team were told that two soldiers learned enough skills to stay alive during combat thanks to marathon sessions in the game. If you've just unwrapped an FPS for the holidays, you can now tell disapproving family members that it's educational.

Best Xbox 360 sports games of 2011

We've decided that sport on the Xbox 360 is infinitely better than sport in real life. You see whereas normal sport is the same every year, barring the odd minor costume change, that simply wouldn't fly with sports games.

They have to get better every year, or we kick up a big old stink. If real sport was like Xbox 360 we'd have robot rugby players, rocket powered cricket bats and, you'd hope, goal line technology.

The prayers of a zillion rugger fans were finally answered when not one but two egg-chasing sims turned up at once. The lesser of the two arrived first, and with the more desirable license - Rugby World Cup was superficial fun, but unlikely to last you beyond your team tumbling out of the tournament. With its vast array of club sides, more sophisticated mechanics and even a decent approximation of the international tournaments Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge was a much more substantial offering. Sadly licensing grumbles meant it came out after the home countries were on their planes back to the northern hemisphere. Hopefully it was just about popular enough to warrant a sequel, with less artistic license on the fictional international kits please.

Golfing fans finally received the course they'd been waiting for ever since the click-to-swing golf game was invented all those years ago. The iconic August Masters tournament was recreated in the series formerly known as Tiger Woods, allowing you to pitch and putt your way around arguably the most beautiful golf course in the world. Sadly, Kinect support didn't make it into this year's instalment, but fingers crossed the course will be in next year's, presumably Kinect-enabled, iteration.

Motorsport had an excellent year with the official Formula One 2011 game building on its strong debut. Multiplayer was the focus this time around and licensed game or no, you won't find a more fully featured multiplayer racing game around. Up to 12 players can mix it up with the rest of the grid filled with AI drivers, meaning the first corner of every online race looks and feels as frantic as a proper F1 race. What's more, the co-operative championship is beautifully implemented and has us dreaming of a Forza Motorsport 5 with the same feature.

An honourable mention has to go to WRC 2, which in spite of ropey visuals managed to cling onto a seven out of ten thanks to a career mode that provide just enough to fiddle with in between rallies and the chance to progress to a World Championship drive. Don't expect next year's game to lean quite as hard on the official license if Milestone's new game MUD is anything to go by, though.

We were expecting Virtua Tennis 4 to wow with its Kinect support, but actually that was the limpest part of the game. Instead it was the bizarre World Tour mode that had barely-tennis-themed mini games to distract you from the serious business of a grand slam championship. If you're happy to let Top Spin 4 take care of the more simulation corner of the court - which it does so admirably - then VT4's more arcadey take is the perfect excuse to call for more balls, please.

The yearly clash of the footballing titles took a largely predictable route, with Pro Evo talking a big game and making genuine improvements, but ending up trailing the juggernaut that is FIFA 12. Still, how many football games allow you to attempt the equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach by controlling two players at once? Well, not the other football game, at least.

Southern California Close-Ups: Going Hollywood

Pity the rubes. Those wayward tourists who dawdle in their cars and tour buses along Beachwood Drive, enraging the locals as they haltingly seek that perfect Hollywood sign photo op ? they know not what they do. Maybe you're not from this neighborhood either, but you have savvier Hollywood plans.

They involve horse trails, hidden hotels, a magic castle, a monastery ? and that's just a start. To close out our yearlong series of Southern California Close-Ups, here is a set of 10 Hollywood micro-itineraries, suitable for visitors from across town or across the planet. To see the previous 11 installments in our multimedia tour of Los Angeles and Orange counties, go to latimes.com/socalcloseups.

1. Get thee to a nunnery

The Hollywood sign (Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)

More specifically, head for the Monastery of the Angels (1977 Carmen Ave., a mile from the Hollywood sign), where 17 cloistered nuns spend their days praying, eating, sleeping and making desserts. Hand $10 to the gift-shop volunteer for a hefty loaf of pumpkin bread ? a fine souvenir, if it lasts that long. Then head two blocks east to Beachwood Drive, turn north toward the famous sign and keep going even after the road dwindles to dirt. There you'll find Sunset Ranch (3400 Beachwood Drive), where horses can be rented for guided rides (ages 8 and older). For $30 you get an hour. Start about 4 p.m. on a clear winter day and you'll get a different angle of the Hollywood sign, but better still, a Technicolor panorama with setting sun, a distant sliver of the Pacific, city lights at your feet and a whiff of horse manure to keep it real. The ranch is also the starting point for the Hollyridge Trail hike, which takes you near the fenced-off Hollywood sign, or you can explore the half-dozen public staircases threaded among the hillside homes. (Plot your route at http://www.beachwoodcanyon.org/Stairs.htm or buy Charles Fleming's 2010 paperback "Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles." And in the interest of full disclosure: Fleming is an L.A. Times editor.) When you're done, you'll want a thick slice of that pumpkin bread and maybe a nap in your room at the handy Best Western Plus Hollywood Hills Hotel (6141 Franklin Ave.). The hotel is a mid-range, retro-mod affair with signed glossies of Ray Charles and Marty Feldman on the lobby wall; the movie "Swingers" was written in the lobby-adjacent 101 Coffee Shop.

2. The Bowl, the Greek, the difference

The Hollywood Bowl (Robyn Beck / AFP / Getty Images)

The Hollywood Bowl (2301 N. Highland Ave.) is such a prime city asset that it's a wonder nobody has proposed selling it to reduce municipal debt. It was carved into the hills in the 1920s and programmed by the L.A. Philharmonic, seats about 17,000 people and stages mostly jazz, classical works and show-tune performances, June through September. For newbies, the big surprise is that by long tradition, audiences can bring their own picnics, beer and wine. The city's other prime summer pop-concert option, the Greek Theatre, four miles east at 2700 Vermont Ave., is more intimate, with room for just 5,800 and a season that runs from late April through late October. The Greek will not let you bring in your own food or drink.

3. Hip strip

Oaks Gourmet Market (Elina Shatkin)

You're not in a hurry. So you patiently seek one of the rare parking spots off Franklin Avenue near Tamarind Avenue, then meander past the trendy row of shops and restaurants between Tamarind and Bronson avenues. Browse Counterpoint Records & Books (5911 Franklin Ave.), scan magazines at the Daily Planet (59311/2 Franklin Ave.). The casual Victor's restaurant (1917 N. Bronson Ave.) will seat you beneath old photos of the hills. The Oaks Gourmet Market (1915 N. Bronson Ave.) will sell you fancy wines and beers, make you a lunch to take away or feed you at the shop's one communal table.

4. Musso, Frank, Pantages, Frolic and Redbury

Pantages Theatre (Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)

Wouldn't that be a great name for an L.A. law firm? Sit down to an early dinner at Musso & Frank Grill (6667 Hollywood Blvd.), the oldest restaurant in Hollywood (opened 1919), for old-world service, setting and menu, with juicy steaks and the option of Jell-O for dessert. Then nip out back for a high-end cocktail ($14) at the Writer's Room (6685 Hollywood Blvd.), which feels pre-Elvis but opened next door a couple months ago. Now you're ready for a show at the Pantages Theatre (6233 Hollywood Blvd.), whose 1930 Art Deco lobby is one of the greatest rooms in the city. On your way out after the show, admire the vintage sign announcing the Frolic Room (6245 Hollywood Blvd.). You'll sleep around the corner at the Redbury Hotel (1717 Vine St.), whose 57 rooms are about twice the size of those at the glitzy W Hotel (6250 Hollywood Blvd.) and sometimes more affordable. The Redbury has no pool, but every room has a washer, dryer and turntable. It's where the cool kids might come after having kids of their own. As for the W, it's for those who can't resist a slice o' Vegas ? a party hotel where scene-makers rage into the wee hours at Drai's nightclub next to the rooftop pool.

5. A movie? Or a live show about movies?

Hollywood & Highland complex (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times)

If you can handle $56 a person and up, there's no better place than Hollywood to see a sort-of play about movies ? Cirque du Soleil's "Iris," which shares the Kodak Theatre (6801 Hollywood Blvd.) with the annual Oscars ceremony. "Iris," which premiered in mid-2011, is a mix of gymnastics, dancing, live music, cinematic effects and trapeze work, held together by a slender plot. It's expected to run for years. Even if your mind starts wandering after intermission, the evening is a great showcase for performers with stupendous skills. Because the theater is enveloped by the Hollywood & Highland mall, you can check the shops and its ridiculous highflying concrete elephants (inspired by D.W. Griffith's movie sets). But wait. If you have kids younger than 8 or so ? or a tighter budget ? skip the Kodak. Cross the street and see a movie in Disney's exuberantly restored El Capitan Theatre (6838 Hollywood Blvd). This venue, built in 1926, premiered "Citizen Kane" in 1941 and kicked off Hollywood's revival with its reopening 50 years later. If you're a screen history geek or in a celebratory mood, you might like the Spanish-style Roosevelt Hotel (7000 Hollywood Blvd.), where the first Academy Awards were held in 1929, where Shirley Temple is said to have danced with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson on the lobby steps, and where there are several busy bars and restaurants, including the well-regarded burger joint Twenty-Five Degrees, which stays open all night. It can get loud on weekends, and recent renovations have unaccountably mixed Asian minimalism with the old Spanish flourishes. The Renaissance Hollywood Hotel (1755 N. Highland Ave.), comparably priced, twice the size, only 10 years old and right next to Hollywood & Highland, will suit some travelers better.

6. Concrete handprints, terrazzo stars and the boulevard
